Langston University is an influential institution of higher learning. Here is a detailed introduction about it:
Historical background:
Founded in 1897, it has a long history. At that time, it was called "Oklahoma Colored Agricultural and Normal University". In 1941, in honor of John Mercer Langston, a civil rights pioneer, the first African-American congressman in Virginia, the founder of Howard University Law School, and the U.S. Consul General in Haiti, the school was renamed Langston University.
Foundation reason: It is a product of the United States' Second Morrill Act. The act requires states with land-grant colleges (such as Oklahoma State University at the time) to either admit African Americans or provide them with an alternative school to attend in order to obtain federal funding.
School status:
It is the only Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in Oklahoma and the westernmost HBUC in the United States.
The school is a member school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and has a unique position in black education and the American higher education system.
Campus distribution:
The main campus is located in Lanston, Oklahoma, 10 miles (16 kilometers) east of Guthrie, and is a rural campus.
In addition to the main campus, there are branch campuses in Tulsa (located on the same campus as the Tulsa campus of Oklahoma State University) and Oklahoma City to fulfill the mission of urban education and facilitate urban students.
Academic majors:
College settings: It consists of six colleges, including the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences, the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, the College of Nursing and Health, and the College of Physical Therapy.
Professional courses: The courses offered are rich and diverse, covering computer information science, finance, education, drama arts, mathematics, biology, accounting, economics, physical therapy, psychology, sociology and other fields. For example, professional courses such as algorithms and data structures, financial economics, behavioral corrections, and urban education.
Teaching characteristics and achievements:
STEM education advantages: Excellent performance in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) subjects. For more than ten years, the retention rate of STEM students has exceeded the national average.
Practical teaching: Provide students with a large number of practical opportunities, cooperate with well-known institutions such as Harvard, Stanford, and NASA, let students participate in internships and research projects, and cultivate students' practical ability and innovative spirit.
Campus culture:
Student organizations and clubs: There are a wealth of student organizations and club activities, including 11 Greek life organizations, which provide students with a wide range of social and self-development opportunities.
Sports tradition: The school's sports programs are also relatively outstanding. It has 8 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NAIA) sports teams. Its men's basketball team has won the division championship of the Sooner Athletic Conference. The school's marching band ranks among the top ten similar bands in HBCUs.
Homecoming: The annual homecoming is one of the school's important activities, attracting many alumni and students to participate, enhancing the school's cohesion and alumni's sense of belonging.
Faculty: We have an excellent team of teachers who have rich experience and outstanding achievements in teaching and scientific research. For example, Professor Zeng Shoushan, the director of the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, has achieved remarkable results in research and teaching in the field of dairy products.
