History

The history of the school can be traced back to the 14th century Antwerp navigation teaching. In 1814, Napoleon established the predecessor of the school in order to make Antwerp a base against Britain. In 1834 the school was "re-established" under Belgian regime, with the language of instruction initially being French and education being under the Ministry of Transport, as international maritime "rules of the road" were an important part of the curriculum.

During the interwar period the school was expanded due to the increase in motorised shipping and the addition of a Dutch-language department, and a new main building was constructed. Following federalisation in 1989, jurisdiction of the school was transferred to the Flemish Ministry of Education, but the Ministry of Transport retains control over the level and content of specific nautical subjects.
