University of San Carlos de Guatemala (Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala - USAC)
1. Overview
The University of San Carlos is Guatemala's only national public university and the country's largest and oldest. Known as the "Mother University of the Republic of Guatemala," it has played a central role in the country's development, politics, science, technology, and culture. Its mission is to provide universal, high-quality higher education, promote scientific research and cultural dissemination, and serve society.
2. History and Founding
Founded: January 31, 1676.
Historical Background: Founded by royal decree of King Carlos II of Spain, USAC is the first university in Guatemala and Central America. Its predecessor can be traced back to the College of Santo Tomas, founded in 1562. During the colonial period, it primarily taught theology, law, and medicine. Since its founding, USAC has been a key platform for social change and intellectual liberation in Guatemala, and many national leaders and intellectuals have graduated from it.
3. Disciplines and Academic Structure
USAC offers a wide range of academic programs, covering nearly every discipline. Its teaching and research centers are located throughout the country. The university is primarily composed of the following faculties:
Medical and Health Sciences: School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, School of Chemistry and Pharmacy, and School of Veterinary Medicine.
Engineering and Technology: School of Engineering, School of Architecture, and School of Agriculture.
Humanities and Social Sciences: School of Law and Social Sciences, School of Economics, School of Humanities, and School of Psychology.
Science and Arts: School of Science, School of Chemistry and Biology, and School of Fine Arts.
In addition, the university has several research institutes, regional centers, and technical schools, providing educational opportunities for students from various regions.
4. Tuition
As a public university, USAC offers extremely low tuition, primarily funded by state funding.
Tuition typically consists of a nominal registration fee and student service fee, costing only a few dozen to a few hundred RMB per semester (the exact amount varies by major and course, but is significantly lower than international standards).
This low tuition policy is intended to ensure that all Guatemalan citizens who meet the academic requirements, regardless of their economic background, have access to higher education.
5. Global Rankings
Due to its public and service-oriented nature, as well as its position as a regional university, USAC is not widely visible in major international rankings (such as QS and THE), and is generally not ranked among the top 1,000 worldwide.
However, it is undoubtedly one of the most important and prestigious academic institutions in Guatemala and the Central American region.
Reasons for its low ranking include a relatively low number of international publications and citations, a primary language of instruction in Spanish, and a ranking system that favors universities modeled after the Anglo-American model.
6. Other Important Information
Autonomy: Under the Guatemalan Constitution, USAC enjoys full academic, economic, and administrative autonomy.
Social Influence: The university is deeply involved in national affairs, and its legal opinions and scientific research have a significant impact on national policy. Students are also actively involved in social and political activities.
Campus: The main campus is located in Guatemala City, Guatemala's capital, but branches and regional centers are located throughout the country, with a student population exceeding 100,000.
In short, the University of San Carlos is more than just an educational institution in Guatemala; it is a vital component of the country's national identity, history, and culture, and has educated countless individuals for Guatemalan development.
