Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) is located on West Third Ring Road North, Haidian District, Beijing. It has two campuses, East and West, on both sides of the Third Ring Road. It is directly under the Ministry of Education, one of the first batch of "211 Project" universities, a "985" advantage discipline innovation platform university, and one of the first batch of "Double First-Class" universities. BFSU is the first foreign language college founded by the Communist Party of China. Its predecessor was the Russian language team of the Third Branch of the Chinese Anti-Japanese Military and Political University established in Yan'an in 1941. It later developed into the Foreign Languages School of the Central Military Commission and was under the leadership of the Party Central Committee since its establishment. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the school was under the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1954, it was renamed Beijing Foreign Studies University. In 1959, it merged with the Beijing Russian Language Institute to form the new Beijing Foreign Studies University. After 1980, it was directly under the leadership of the Ministry of Education and officially changed its name to Beijing Foreign Studies University in 1994. BFSU has been approved to offer 101 foreign languages. The European language group and the Asian and African language group are currently the largest non-universal language construction bases in my country and are the first batch of characteristic professional construction points of the Ministry of Education. The school has formed a pattern of coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as literature, law, economics, management and education, with foreign languages and literature as the main discipline. Azbek, Latin, Zulu, Kyrgyz, Pashto, Sanskrit, Pali, Amharic, Nepali, Somali, Tamil, Turkmen, Catalan, Yoruba, Mongolian, Armenian, Malagasy, Georgian, Azerbaijani, Afrikaans, Macedonian, Tajik, Setswana, Ndebele, Comorian, Creole, Shona, Tigrinya, Belarusian, Maori, Tonga, Samoan, Kurdish, Bislama, Dari, Tetum, Dhivehi, Fijian, Cook Islands Maori, Lundi, Luxembourgish, Kinyarwanda, Niuean, Pidgin, Chewa, Setsutho, Sangho, Tamazigot, Javanese, and Punjabi. The school upholds the spirit of Yan'an and insists on serving the national strategy. At present, it has opened the official language of countries that have established diplomatic relations with China. In recent years, the school has vigorously promoted the reform of talent training mode, established the first teaching material department of domestic universities, established Beijing Foreign Studies University College, International Organization College, and International Education College. On the basis of the original Asian and African College, it has expanded into the Asian College and the African College, established the Key Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Human Language, strengthened the construction of international communication capabilities, and established the Institute of International Communication of Chinese Culture, the National Translation Capacity Research Center and other characteristic research institutions. The school also has Beijing Key Research Base for Philosophy and Social Sciences, Beijing Education and Law Research Base, and has been selected as the first batch of national language promotion bases, the first batch of Beijing Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics Research Center Research Base, and has been awarded the Beijing University Socialism with Chinese Characteristics Theory Research Collaborative Innovation Center. The school hosts four CSSCI source journals, "Foreign Language Teaching and Research", "Foreign Literature", "International Forum", and "Foreign Language Education Research Frontier", and two CSSCI extended version source journals, "International Sinology" and "Chinese Russian Teaching", and publishes 7 other Chinese academic journals; it hosts the ESCI English journal "Chinese Journal of Applied Linguistics" and other multilingual journals, totaling 12, covering 7 languages including English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, German, and Portuguese. The school has the largest publishing base for foreign language books, audio-visual and electronic products in the country: Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. BFSU offers 121 undergraduate majors, of which 47 are the only majors in the country, 54 are national first-class undergraduate majors, and 18 are provincial first-class undergraduate majors. 8 teaching achievements won the 2021 Beijing Higher Education Teaching Achievement Award, including:The "BFSU Model for Cultivating Multilingual Global Competence" won the special prize. The school currently has 4 national key disciplines (including cultivation disciplines) and 7 Beijing key disciplines. It has 2 first-level doctoral programs (foreign languages and literature, management science and engineering), 11 first-level academic master's programs (foreign languages and literature, Chinese languages and literature, journalism and communication, law, political science, Marxist theory, applied economics, management science and engineering, business administration, education, world history), and 8 professional master's programs (translation, Chinese international education, international business, finance, journalism and communication, law, accounting, and master of business administration), covering seven major disciplines: literature, economics, management, law, education, history, and engineering. The discipline of foreign languages and literature has been selected as a national "double first-class" construction discipline. "Foreign Language Education" has been approved as a high-end discipline in Beijing universities. In the fourth round of national discipline evaluation results, the school's first-level discipline of foreign languages and literature was rated A+, ranking first in the country. In the 2023 QS World University Rankings by Subject, the school's language degree ranked 45th, English language and literature ranked 101-150, and modern language degree ranked 151-200, ranking first among similar institutions in China. The school has more than 5,700 undergraduate students, more than 3,900 graduate students (masters and doctors), and more than 1,300 international students. The library of BFSU has a collection of nearly 1.57 million paper books in Chinese and foreign languages, more than 2.16 million electronic books in Chinese and foreign languages, 1,081 Chinese and foreign newspapers and periodicals, and 107 Chinese and foreign databases, forming a collection feature with language, literature, and culture as the main materials. In recent years, with the development of discipline construction, literature in politics, law, diplomacy, economy, news, and management has gradually formed a collection system. The school continues to strengthen the construction of educational informatization, forming an informatization development system of "openness, interconnection, intelligence, innovation, and integration", developing multilingual websites, digital BFSU, data centers, online teaching, teaching resources and other software platforms; building smart classrooms and smart learning environments, and forming a number of landmark achievements. In 2021, the first batch of pilot projects of the Ministry of Education's artificial intelligence-assisted teacher team building action in BFSU will be completed, and the "BFSU Initiative on Artificial Intelligence to Promote the Development of College Teachers" will be released. The World Language Museum will be built to create a new landmark of language and culture, and a new school history museum will be completed to fully display the history of BFSU.
