Renmin University of China is the first new regular university founded by the Communist Party of China. It is directly under the Ministry of Education and jointly established by the Ministry of Education and Beijing. The current party secretary is Zhang Donggang and the president is Lin Shangli. Historical evolution and leadership care The predecessor of Renmin University of China was the Shaanxi-Northern Public School, which was born in the flames of the Anti-Japanese War in 1937, and later the North China United University, Northern University, and North China University. The school has always shared the same fate with the party and the country, and has always received the cordial care and high attention of the Party Central Committee. During the Shaanxi-Northern Public School period, Comrade Mao Zedong was very concerned about the school's school-running work and came to the school to give speeches ten times. He once said: "China will not perish because of Shaanxi Public School." According to the suggestion of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, on December 16, 1949, the 11th State Council of the State Council of the Central People's Government decided to establish Renmin University of China. On October 3, 1950, Comrade Liu Shaoqi attended the opening ceremony of the school and delivered a speech, pointing out that Renmin University of China "is the first modern university established in New China, a university unprecedented in Chinese history, and many universities in China in the future will learn from the experience of Renmin University of China and run in the same way as Renmin University of China". This is "the starting point of completely new higher education in New China". The school has rapidly developed into a comprehensive university with significant influence, focusing on training talents in Marxist-Leninist theory and cadres in finance, economics, and politics and law. After the reform and opening up, Comrade Deng Xiaoping pointed out that the school "mainly trains cadres in finance, trade, economic management and Marxist-Leninist theory workers". Comrade Jiang Zemin visited the school in 2002 to inspect and guide the work, emphasizing the development and prosperity of philosophy and social sciences, and encouraging the school to "become a world-renowned first-class university with humanities and social sciences as the main focus". Comrade Hu Jintao visited the school in 2008 and 2010, encouraging the school to carry forward the glorious tradition, "run with characteristics and level", and strive to create a "people-satisfied, world-class" university. Comrade Xi Jinping has attended activities and inspected the work of the university five times in 2005, 2006, 2009, 2012 and 2022. Entering the new era, in 2017, General Secretary Xi Jinping sent a letter to congratulate the university on its 80th anniversary, fully affirming the school's achievements in running schools, and clearly pointed out that Renmin University of China is "unique in the field of humanities and social sciences in my country", and earnestly hoped that the university would "focus on solving the fundamental problem of who to train, what kind of people to train, and how to train people, adhere to moral education, follow the laws of education, carry forward fine traditions, run universities rooted in China, and strive to build world-class universities and first-class disciplines". On April 25, 2022, General Secretary Xi Jinping made a special trip to the school for inspection and research and delivered an important speech. He pointed out that Renmin University of China was born in the flames of the Anti-Japanese War and grew and developed under the care of the Party. It has a glorious revolutionary tradition and a distinctive red gene. What remains unchanged is "educating people for the Party and cultivating talents for the country", demonstrating the spiritual character of "the Party-run university makes the Party feel at ease, and the people's university lives up to the people". He encouraged the school to uphold the Party's leadership, uphold the guiding role of Marxism, persist in serving the cause of the Party and the people, implement the fundamental task of cultivating morality and educating people, inherit the red gene, run universities rooted in the land of China, and embark on a new path to build a world-class university with Chinese characteristics. School characteristics and advantages Since its establishment, Renmin University of China has always adhered to the leadership of the Party, inherited the red gene, and taken root in the land of China. It has formed three major school characteristics: the cradle of "builders of the People's Republic", the center of higher education in humanities and social sciences, and the highland of Marxist teaching and research. It has made important contributions to the development and prosperity of my country's philosophy and social sciences and the cause of socialist modernization with Chinese characteristics. It has become a model and epitome of the Communist Party of China's exploration and establishment of new higher education and taking root in China to run universities. It is known as a banner in the field of higher education in humanities and social sciences in my country. From 1950 to the present, the country has established key universities, and Renmin University of China has been among them. The school is a key construction university of the national "985 Project" and "211 Project". In 2017, it was selected into the first batch of the national "World-Class Universities and First-Class Disciplines" construction list. Renmin University of China takes "unique humanities and social sciences" as the overall discipline construction goal, and is committed to building a discipline layout of "leading Marxist theoretical disciplines, excellent basic disciplines, top social science disciplines, and innovative interdisciplinary disciplines". At present, the school has 8 national key first-level disciplines and 8 national key second-level disciplines, ranking first in the country in the field of humanities and social sciences. The university has 86 bachelor's degree programs, 34 first-level master's degree authorization points, 25 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 32 professional degree master's degree authorization points, and 1 professional degree doctoral degree authorization point; there are 21 postdoctoral research mobile stations. In the results of the fourth round of national discipline evaluation announced by the Ministry of Education in 2017, Renmin University of China has a total of 14 A-level disciplines, including theoretical economics, applied economics, law, sociology, journalism and communication, statistics, business administration, public administration, and Marxist theory, which are rated A+, political science and philosophy are rated A, and library information and archives management, Chinese history, and Chinese language and literature are rated A-. The number of A+ disciplines ranks fourth among universities in the country; in the first round of the Ministry of Education's "Double First-Class" construction evaluation, the school's 14 first-class disciplines performed well and continued to be selected in the second round of "Double First-Class" construction disciplines. The science and engineering disciplines have continuously optimized their layout and developed rapidly in accordance with the positioning of "excellent basic disciplines", which has effectively promoted the development of innovative interdisciplinary disciplines in the school. Renmin University of China has always been a gathering of talents and famous scholars. Professor Wei Xinghua and Professor Gao Mingxuan, the only two winners of the national honorary title of "People's Educator" in the field of higher education in the country, are both from Renmin University of China. 22 people from the school serve as members of the 8th Discipline Evaluation Group of the State Council Academic Degree Committee, 47 people are selected as members of the new Higher Education Teaching Guidance Committee of the Ministry of Education, a total of 132 people are selected for the National Major Talent Project, 508 people enjoy the special government allowance of the State Council, and 136 people are selected for the National Major Youth Talent Project. As of January 2024, the school has 1,956 full-time teachers, including 801 professors and 751 associate professors. Social Contribution and Influence From the Shaanxi-Northern Public School period to the present, the school has trained more than 380,000 high-level builders and outstanding talents from all walks of life. The first doctoral student in law, journalism and other disciplines in New China, the first foreign student doctoral student in humanities and social sciences, and the first batch of doctoral students in political economy, world economy, monetary banking, statistics and other majors are all from Renmin University of China. Two articles of milestone significance for China's reform and opening up - "Practice is the only criterion for testing truth" and "Spring in the East" were both written by Renmin University. Entering the new era, the school takes "rejuvenation pillars, strong country pioneers" as the talent training goal, educates and guides students to strengthen their confidence in the path, theory, system and culture of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and bravely become pioneers and career pioneers in the new journey of building a modern socialist country in an all-round way. As of January 2024, the school has 28,224 students, including 11,749 undergraduates, 11,400 masters and 5,075 doctoral students. For a long time, Renmin University of China has made foundational and leading contributions to the prosperity and development of philosophy and social sciences in my country. Many disciplines such as economics, law, journalism, and Marxist theory in New China were first established by Renmin University of China and spread across the country. As of January 2024, the university has established partnerships with 312 universities and international organizations in 61 countries and regions, and participated in the construction of 7 overseas Confucius Institutes.
