China University of Petroleum (East China) is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. It is one of the universities that is the focus of the national "211 Project" and has carried out the construction of the "985 Project Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform" and has a graduate school. The school is a university jointly built by the Ministry of Education and five major energy enterprise groups, the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Shandong Province. It is an important base for the cultivation of high-level talents in petroleum and petrochemicals. It is known as the "cradle of petroleum technology and management talents". It has now become a university with engineering as the main focus, distinctive petroleum and petrochemical characteristics, and coordinated development of multiple disciplines. In 2017 and 2022, it entered the ranks of national "double first-class" construction universities. Looking back on the history of the school, at the beginning of the founding of New China in 1953, the national economic construction urgently needed oil resources, and the development of the petroleum industry urgently needed professional talents. Under this situation, based on the Department of Petroleum Engineering of Tsinghua University, the relevant faculty and school conditions of famous universities such as Peking University, Tianjin University, and Dalian Institute of Technology were gathered to establish the first petroleum university in New China-Beijing Petroleum Institute, which was affiliated to the Ministry of Fuel Industry and was one of the eight famous colleges in Beijing at that time. In October 1960, the university was designated as a national key university. In 1969, the university moved to Dongying, Shandong, where Shengli Oilfield is located, and was renamed East China Petroleum Institute. In June 1981, the Graduate School was established at the original site of Beijing Petroleum Institute. In 1988, the university was renamed Petroleum University, and gradually formed a pattern of running schools in Shandong and Beijing. In 1997, Petroleum University officially entered the ranks of the first batch of key universities in the national "211 Project". In 2000, Petroleum University was transferred from China National Petroleum Corporation to the Ministry of Education. In June 2000, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the university established a graduate school. In October 2003, the Ministry of Education and the four major national oil companies signed an agreement to jointly build Petroleum University. In August 2004, the Ministry of Education approved the construction of Qingdao Campus of Petroleum University (East China). In January 2005, the university was renamed China University of Petroleum. In August 2005, the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Shandong Province signed an agreement to jointly build China University of Petroleum (East China). In October 2006, the university passed the evaluation of undergraduate teaching work of the Ministry of Education with "excellent" results. In 2010, the university became one of the first 61 pilot universities to implement the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" and one of the 32 universities under the Ministry of Education to undertake the national "Professional Degree Graduate Education Comprehensive Reform Pilot Work". In April 2014, the Ministry of Education signed an agreement with five major energy enterprise groups, including China National Petroleum Corporation, China Petrochemical Corporation, China National Offshore Oil Corporation, Shenhua Group Co., Ltd., and Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum (Group) Co., Ltd., to jointly build China University of Petroleum. In December 2018, the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Shandong Province focused on jointly building China University of Petroleum (East China). In 2021, the registered place of the university was adjusted to Qingdao. The university covers a total area of more than 5,000 acres and a building area of more than 1.3 million square meters. It has developed a school-running pattern of "two campuses and one park" (Qingdao Tangdao Bay Campus, Guzhenkou Campus and Dongying Science and Education Park). The two campuses in Qingdao are located in Qingdao, a charming sailing capital and a coastal city, which enjoys a high reputation. The Dongying Science and Education Park is located in the central city of the Yellow River Delta, the ecological city, and the oil city - Dongying, Shandong. The "two campuses and one park" are both located in the two major national strategic key areas of "blue and yellow". At the same time, the two campuses in Qingdao are also located in the national new area newly established in 2014 - Qingdao West Coast New Area. The school has a graduate school, a school of earth science and technology, a school of petroleum engineering, a school of chemistry and chemical engineering, a school of mechanical and electrical engineering, a school of storage and transportation and construction engineering, a school of materials science and engineering, a school of new energy for Shidashanneng, a school of marine and space information, a school of control science and engineering, Qingdao Software College, a school of computer science and technology, a school of science, a school of economics and management, a school of foreign languages, a school of liberal arts, a school of Marxism, a physical education department and other 16 teaching colleges (departments), as well as a collection of colleges, international education colleges, distance education colleges and continuing education colleges. The disciplines and majors cover all fields of the petroleum and petrochemical industry, and the overall level of the main petroleum disciplines is in a leading position in China. There are 14 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 7 second-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 9 interdisciplinary disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 4 doctoral professional degree authorization categories, 33 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 15 master's professional degree authorization categories, 60 undergraduate enrollment majors, and 11 postdoctoral mobile stations. It has 5 national key disciplines, including mineral survey and exploration, oil and gas well engineering, oil and gas field development engineering, chemical technology, and oil and gas storage and transportation engineering, as well as 2 national key (cultivation) disciplines, including earth exploration and information technology, and industrial catalysis. 8 disciplines, including engineering, chemistry, materials science, earth science, computer science, environment and ecology, general social sciences, and mathematics, have entered the top 1% of the ESI global discipline rankings, among which engineering, chemistry, and earth science have entered the top 1‰ of the ESI global discipline rankings. Two first-level disciplines, geological resources and geological engineering, and petroleum and natural gas engineering, have been selected into the national "Double First-Class" construction plan. The school has a complete education system and a reasonable structure of various education levels. There are more than 19,000 full-time undergraduate students, more than 10,000 graduate students, and more than 700 international students. Since its establishment, the school has always adhered to the fundamental task of talent training, focused on building a quality brand of talent training, and won a wide social reputation. A large number of outstanding talents have emerged from the alumni, including 30 academicians of the two academies and a large number of leading figures and engineering and technical backbones in the petroleum and petrochemical industry. In 2004, it was awarded the honorary title of "National Advanced Employment Unit" by the State Council. In 2011, it was selected as one of the 50 universities with typical experience in graduate employment in the country. In 2019, it was selected as a "National Demonstration Base for Innovative Talent Training". The school has a high-quality teaching team with noble professional ethics, superb business, reasonable structure and vitality. There are more than 1,700 teachers, including more than 1,200 professors and associate professors, and 395 doctoral supervisors. There are 26 people including academicians of the two academies (including dual appointments), Changjiang Scholars Distinguished Professors, recipients of the National Outstanding Young Scientist Fund, leading talents in science and technology innovation of the National "Ten Thousand Talents Program", and selected candidates of the National "Million Talents Project"; 38 people including Changjiang Scholars Young Scholars, recipients of the National Outstanding Young Scientist Fund, young top talents of the National "Ten Thousand Talents Program", and selected candidates of the "New Century Excellent Talents Support Program" of the Ministry of Education; 16 winners of the China Youth Science and Technology Award, the Ministry of Education's College Young Teacher Award, the Ho Ying-Tong Education Foundation Young Teacher Fund and Young Teacher Award; 86 people including Shandong Taishan Scholars and recipients of Shandong Outstanding Young Scientist Fund; 7 people including National Model Teachers, National Outstanding Teachers, National Teaching Master Award winners, and National "Ten Thousand Talents Program" teaching masters; 1 National Natural Science Foundation Innovation Research Group, 3 Ministry of Education Innovation Teams, and 1 Shandong Taishan Scholar Advantageous and Characteristic Discipline Talent Team; 2 Huang Danian-style teacher teams in national universities and 3 national teaching teams. The school is an important base for scientific research in the petroleum and petrochemical industry. It has strong strengths in basic theoretical research and applied research, and ranks at the leading domestic and international advanced levels in more than 10 research fields. There are 41 national and provincial scientific research platforms, including the National Key Laboratory of Deep Oil and Gas, the National Key Laboratory of Heavy Oil, the National Engineering Research Center for Marine Geophysical Exploration and Exploration and Development Equipment, and the China-Saudi Arabia Petroleum Energy "Belt and Road" Joint Laboratory. The school adheres to open education, continuously expands the field of social services and development space, and has signed comprehensive cooperation agreements with more than 80 local governments, large enterprises and institutions in China. The school attaches great importance to international exchanges and cooperation, and has established substantive cooperation and exchange relations with more than 200 colleges and universities and academic institutions in 50 countries and regions such as the United States, France, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Russia. More than 100 famous experts and celebrities have been hired as part-time professors, honorary professors and visiting professors of our school. In recent years, international cooperation and exchange projects have gradually increased, showing a good development prospect.
