Dali University is a higher education institution jointly established by the province and the state. Its predecessor was Dali Medical College and Dali Teachers College, which were established in 1978. In 2001, the two schools merged to form Dali College, which was approved as a master's degree-granting institution in 2003. It was renamed Dali University in 2015 and was approved as a doctoral degree-granting institution in 2021. After 45 years of school-running, the school has developed into a comprehensive university with advantages in biomedical research and development, ethnic culture research, and ecological environmental protection, and with international student education as its characteristics. It is the first general higher education institution in non-capital cities in Yunnan Province to carry out undergraduate education and obtain the right to confer master's and doctoral degrees. Its role and status as a "leader" in local universities in Yunnan are increasingly prominent and consolidated. The school has 19 teaching colleges, 10 affiliated hospitals, and more than 22,000 full-time students. There is currently one first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization point, 8 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, and 15 master's professional degree authorization points. The disciplines of botany and zoology are among the top 1% of ESI global disciplines. There are 73 undergraduate majors, including 7 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites and 21 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites. The pharmacy major has been supported by Yunnan Province's "Increase A and Remove D" action. There are 2 national first-class undergraduate courses and 29 provincial first-class undergraduate courses. The school has brought together more than 100 national and provincial talents such as "Changjiang Scholars" and "Outstanding Youth". There are more than 20 scientific research platforms at the provincial and ministerial level, such as the National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for the Development of Special Insects for Medicinal Use and the National Teacher Development Collaborative Innovation Experimental Base, and 9 provincial and ministerial innovation teams. In the past five years, the school has won more than 200 national natural science fund projects, national social science fund projects, and humanities and social science projects of the Ministry of Education. More than 100 academic papers have been published in top international journals such as "Nature Communications", and more than 30 teaching and scientific research achievement awards at the provincial and ministerial level have been won, including the National Innovation Award, the Second Prize of National Teaching Achievements, and the First Prize of Yunnan Science and Technology Progress. For a long time, Dali University has adhered to the service positioning of "based in Dali, serving western Yunnan, facing Yunnan and surrounding provinces and regions, and radiating South Asia and Southeast Asia". Focusing on the needs of regional economic and social development, it is committed to talent training, scientific research, social services, cultural inheritance and innovation, and international exchanges and cooperation. The results of running schools are constantly showing, and the characteristics of running schools are increasingly prominent. It has made positive contributions to expanding Dali's international influence, enhancing Dali's international reputation, and promoting regional economic and social development. First, it is rooted in western Yunnan and provides talent support for the economic and social development of western Yunnan. Over the past 45 years, the school has adhered to the original intention of "changing the lack of medical care and medicine and backward education in western Yunnan", closely combined with the unique location and resource advantages of Yunnan Province and western Yunnan, and continuously explored the characteristics of disciplines and majors, and innovated talent training models. More than 200,000 high-quality talents who "can go down, stay, use, and play a role" have been cultivated. Among them, 80% stayed in western Yunnan and other regions, and 60% were in the front line of education and medical care in western Yunnan, providing talent guarantee and intellectual support for promoting prosperity and stability in the western Yunnan border and ethnic unity and harmony. Second, it actively serves the local area and provides intellectual support for regional economic and social development. The school adheres to the scientific research concept of "one mountain, one water, one tribe, one history", and is committed to biomedicine research and development, ethnic culture research, ecological environment protection, development of western Yunnan's characteristic medicinal plants, and research on endemic disease prevention and control. After several generations of efforts, the school has built a "biomedicine discipline group" to support Yunnan's biomedicine and health industry and a "national culture discipline group" to promote the prosperity and stability of ethnic minority areas in the western Yunnan border, which has effectively supported the industrial development of western Yunnan and the stability of the border. Third, it actively serves the national strategy and explores new practices for the construction of a radiation center facing South Asia and Southeast Asia. Over the years, the school has adhered to the school-running philosophy of "integrating the culture of the world and casting the university spirit" and comprehensively promoted international exchanges and cooperation. In 2006, it was listed as the first batch of "going out" strategic pilot universities in Yunnan Province. In 2008, it was identified as the "Yunnan International Applied Talent Training Base". The internationalization of education, especially the education of international students, has become a highlight and feature of the school. At present, the school has established cooperative relations with more than 50 universities and educational institutions abroad. In 2007, the "DHY Chinese Center" was established at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and in 2017, the "Maritime Silk Road Confucius Institute" was established at the Royal University of Phra Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. In 2018, it was identified as the "Yunnan Chinese Education Base". Now, 7 "Overseas Chinese Teaching Practice Bases" and 2 "Chinese Teaching Practice Bases" have been established in 4 Lancang-Mekong countries (Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia). In 2002, the school began to recruit international students from Southeast Asian countries. Since 2005, clinical medicine students from South Asian countries such as India have been recruited. At present, the school has more than 1,100 full-time international students from more than 20 countries. According to statistics from the Ministry of Education, the number of undergraduate international students in the school has long been at the forefront of universities in western China. According to the "2019 Best Universities in China" released by Shanghai Ranking by Student Internationalization Indicators, the school ranks 13th in the country and 1st in Yunnan Province.
