East China Normal University is a comprehensive research university jointly established by the Ministry of Education and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. The university was founded on October 16, 1951. It was based on Daxia University (1924) and Guanghua University (1925), and was established on the original site of Daxia University. At the same time, some departments of St. John's University, Fudan University, Tongji University and Zhejiang University were transferred in. In 1959, the university was identified as one of the 16 key universities in the country by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. In 1972, the university merged with Shanghai Normal College, Shanghai Institute of Physical Education and other institutions and was renamed Shanghai Normal University. In 1978, the university was again confirmed as a national key university. In 1980, the university resumed the name of East China Normal University. In 1986, the university was approved by the State Council to become one of the 33 universities to establish a graduate school. In 1996, it was included in the ranks of national key universities in the "211 Project". In 1997-1998, Shanghai Preschool Education College, Shanghai Education College and Shanghai Second Education College were successively incorporated. In 2002, according to the strategic deployment of Shanghai's college layout and structural adjustment, the school started the planning and construction of the Minhang campus, and moved the main body to the Minhang campus in 2006, forming a school-running pattern of "one school, two campuses, and coordinated development". In 2006, the Ministry of Education and Shanghai decided to focus on the joint construction of East China Normal University, and the school entered the ranks of national "985 Project" universities. In 2017, the school entered the A-level ranks of national "world-class universities" construction universities, and fully started a new journey of taking root in China to build a first-class university. The school currently has 4 faculties, 34 colleges (departments), 22 school-managed scientific research platforms including 2 national key laboratories, and 3 colleges. There are 36 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 37 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 3 second-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 31 master's professional degree categories, 4 doctoral professional degree categories, and 27 postdoctoral research mobile stations. There are 85 undergraduate majors in total, covering 11 major disciplines including literature, history, philosophy, education, economics, science, engineering, management, law, art, and medicine. It has three national "double first-class" construction disciplines, namely education, ecology, and statistics, and six Shanghai peak disciplines (category I: education, world history, category II: geography, statistics, category IV: island atmosphere and ecology, intelligent education). In the fifth round of discipline evaluation, 40% of the participating disciplines were rated as Class A disciplines. In previous years' selection, it has also won 2 national first-level key disciplines, 5 national second-level key disciplines, 5 national key cultivation disciplines, 12 Shanghai key disciplines, and 17 Shanghai first-class disciplines (4 Class A and 13 Class B). The school currently has 4,269 faculty and staff, including 2,358 full-time teachers. The school has established a Sino-French Joint Graduate School with three French higher normal schools, including the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon; a Sino-French Joint Institute of Social and Scientific Studies with the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon and the French National Center for Scientific Research; the Shanghai New York University, co-founded with New York University, is the first Sino-US university with independent legal personality; the Asia-Europe Business School was co-founded with emlyon business school in France; the Joint Institute of Translational Science and Technology was co-founded with the University of Haifa in Israel; and the Joint Institute of Advanced Science and Technology was co-founded with the University of Alberta in Canada. The school has an international Chinese teacher training base, and as a Chinese partner school, it has built 4 Confucius Institutes and 2 independent Confucius classrooms.
