Guilin Tourism University is located in Guilin, a national historical and cultural city with beautiful scenery. Founded in 1985, it was formerly known as Guilin Tourism College and was renamed "Guilin Tourism College" in 1994. In 2015, it was upgraded to a general undergraduate college with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In 2021, it became a university jointly established by the People's Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. It is one of the two independent full-time public tourism undergraduate colleges in my country and one of the 100 applied undergraduate colleges in the country that are integrated with industry and education. There are currently two campuses, Yanshan and Cangluan, with a total campus area of 1.2572 million square meters (1,885 acres). The school is a key support unit set by the United Nations World Tourism Organization in China and an affiliated member unit of its Education Committee, a member unit of the World Tourism Alliance, an "Excellent Partner for High-end Tourism Talent Training" of the Asian Development Bank, and a "Five-Star Alliance" unit of China's Tourism Colleges. It is the carrier unit of the China-ASEAN Tourism Talent Education and Training Base and the ASEAN Tourism Research Base of the China Tourism Research Institute. It is the initiating school and secretary-general unit of the China-ASEAN Tourism Education Alliance (CATEA), a national professional and technical personnel continuing education base, a national tourism poverty alleviation training base (the only approved university), a national study tour instructor training base, the first batch of Hong Kong and Macao youth study bases, and a Guangxi cadre education and training university base. It is the third batch of national language and writing promotion bases and a newly added master's degree awarding unit in Guangxi. The school currently has 1,039 faculty and staff, including 724 full-time teachers, of which 36.33% are senior professional teachers and 86.32% have master's and doctoral degrees. The university has a group of high-level talents, including national advanced workers, winners of the National May 1st Labor Medal and Guangxi Craftsmen, winners of the Fu Lei Translation Award, national outstanding teachers, national tourism education teachers, national outstanding ideological and political theory teachers in colleges and universities, national ideological and political theory teaching experts in colleges and universities, and selected candidates for the "National Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Ideological and Political Theory Teachers Selection Funding Program for Colleges and Universities", leaders of the Guangxi University Talents Innovation Team, Guangxi Cultural Masters and "Four Batches" Talents, Autonomous Region-level Teaching Masters, Autonomous Region-level Course Ideological and Political Teaching Masters, Guangxi Outstanding Scholars, and Guangxi "New Century Ten Hundred Thousand Talents Project" second-level candidates. The school currently has 14 teaching colleges, covering seven disciplines including management, economics, literature, art, engineering, science, and education. There are more than 17,000 regular full-time students. The school currently has 36 undergraduate majors, covering the six elements of tourism industry, namely “eating, living, traveling, shopping, and entertainment”, as well as new formats such as cultural tourism, health tourism, rural tourism, ecotourism, and sports tourism. It has formed a professional system that matches the industrial structure and built an applied talent training model of “one axis, two wings, three capabilities, and four integrations”. There are 26 industry-university cooperation and collaborative education projects of the Ministry of Education, and more than 300 long-term and stable off-campus practical teaching bases have been established. It has 3 national first-class undergraduate professional construction sites (hotel management, tourism management, cooking and nutrition education), 10 autonomous region first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, and 4 Guangxi undergraduate college specialty majors. There are 4 national first-class undergraduate courses (front office and room management, introduction to tourism, introduction to hotel management, and tourist souvenir design), 20 autonomous region first-class undergraduate courses; 1 national college employment and entrepreneurship gold course (foundation of innovation and entrepreneurship); 1 national boutique resource sharing course, 2 national boutique courses, and 13 autonomous region boutique courses. Won 1 first prize and 1 second prize in the national teaching achievement award. Since its promotion to a university, the university has won 17 autonomous region-level teaching achievement awards, including 2 special prizes, 5 first prizes, 8 second prizes, and 2 third prizes. The university has trained 60,000 high-quality applied cultural and tourism talents and other applied professionals for the cultural and tourism industry and economic and social development, and has been rated as an outstanding unit for employment and entrepreneurship of Guangxi college graduates for seven consecutive years. The university has 1 first-class B-class discipline in Guangxi (tourism management) and 2 key disciplines (cultivation) in Guangxi (tourism management and design). It has a number of provincial key scientific research platforms and Guangxi college scientific research platforms, including the Guangxi Key Laboratory, Guangxi Engineering Research Center, and Guangxi College Key Laboratory. It has the Guangxi Tourism Data Center, Guangxi Tourism Science Research Institute, Guangxi Tourism Industry Talent Highland, Guangxi Red Culture and Tourism Research Base, and Guangxi Postdoctoral Innovation and Practice Base. The school was included in the Ministry of Education's "Plan for Counterpart Support to Colleges and Universities in Western Regions" and became a college supported by Nankai University. As the first college in the country to have a provincial tourism data center, it took the lead in formulating the first provincial tourism big data platform construction local standard in China. The journal Tourism Forum is an important tourism academic research platform in China and has been selected as a core journal of the AMI Comprehensive Evaluation of Chinese Humanities and Social Sciences Journals (2022 edition). The school actively serves the construction of Guilin as a world-class tourist city and the construction of a strong cultural and tourism zone in Guangxi, and actively serves and integrates into the construction of the strategic hinterland of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It has carried out in-depth school-government and school-enterprise cooperation with Liuzhou City, Hechi City, Hezhou City, Yangshuo, Lipu, the Tourism Development Department of the Tibet Autonomous Region, Jiangxi Tourism Group Co., Ltd., and Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. The school has trained more than 60,000 tourism talents for provinces and cities across the country, covering 111 counties (cities, districts) in Guangxi and 31 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities) across the country. Actively carry out tourism poverty alleviation training, and have trained nearly 10,000 rural trainees in total, with a trainee satisfaction rate of 99.6%. The school has successively held more than 30 training courses for high-end tourism management talents for countries along the "Belt and Road". Entrusted by the China-ASEAN Center, the school has sent lecturers to ten ASEAN countries for five consecutive years to carry out foreign aid training for tourism practitioners. The school integrates tourism education into campus culture, adhering to the school motto of "self-cultivation, determination, dedication, and innovation" and the spirit of Guili Tourism of "daring to be the first and pursuing dreams", forming a distinctive cultural education model. The campus has been approved as a national 4A-level tourist attraction, with a number of school landmark buildings such as the Tourism Art Building, Tourism Service Building, Tourism Expo Building, and Tourism Thinking Building. It has built the Guangxi Tourism Museum, "Green Pine Sunset", "Guilin Anti-Japanese War Cultural Celebrities" Sculpture Group, "Party History Centennial, Cultural Matrix" Real-life Teaching Park, Yanshan Kiln and other scenic tourist "check-in points". Create unique Gui Opera radio gymnastics, create campus cultural activity brands such as protocol etiquette competitions and foreign drama festivals. The school won the first batch of civilized campuses in the autonomous region, and 5 secondary colleges were approved as the autonomous region's colleges and universities "three-dimensional education" comprehensive reform demonstration departments. The "Qixuan Yuefu" minority instrumental music inheritance and innovation project won the national college "Respect for China's Excellent Traditional Culture" characteristic display project, and the "Red Navigation Culture Leading Cultural Tourism Integration Talent Cultivation" brand project was selected as the Guangxi college campus culture construction "one school, one product" characteristic brand. The school has carried out multi-field cooperation with international organizations such as the United Nations World Tourism Organization, the World Tourism Alliance, the Asia-Pacific Tourism Association, and more than 20 overseas universities such as the Hong Kong Polytechnic University; and cooperated with EHL Hotel Management Business School (formerly the Swiss Lausanne Hotel Management School) to run undergraduate programs in hotel management. Overseas campuses have been established in Indonesia and Kazakhstan, and a Brunei Chinese Tourism Talent Training Center has been established; "China-Indonesia Tourism Education Cooperation" was selected as a key project of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's 2019 "Belt and Road" cultural and tourism industry international cooperation. The school has successively held more than 30 training courses for high-end tourism management talents for countries along the "Belt and Road". Entrusted by the China-ASEAN Center, the school has sent lecturers to ten ASEAN countries for five consecutive years to carry out foreign aid training for tourism practitioners. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Golodets and two secretaries-general of the United Nations World Tourism Organization visited the school and gave speeches. The Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, Rifai, commented: "The cooperation with the school has become a model for the United Nations World Tourism Organization to carry out cooperation in various related fields, and it is worth promoting worldwide." The school was born and prospered because of tourism. Facing the future, it will surely be strong because of tourism. The school adheres to the industry-oriented, local and application-oriented school-running type positioning, and adheres to the service-oriented positioning of "rooted in the industry, based in Guilin, serving Guangxi, facing the whole country, and radiating ASEAN". In accordance with the requirements of the autonomous region’s party committee and government for the school to "build a high-level tourism university" and the "two-stage" development goals and "1+3+9" overall development strategy proposed by the school’s second party congress, it is cultivating high-quality application-oriented talents needed for the cultural and tourism industry and regional economic and social development, and accelerating the construction of a high-level tourism university with distinctive industry characteristics.
