Guilin University of Technology is a university jointly established by the central and local governments and mainly managed by the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The school originated from the Guilin School of Geology established by the former Ministry of Heavy Industry in Guangxi in 1956. It has undergone five changes of affiliation and ten changes of school name. Among them, it was renamed Guilin Institute of Metallurgical Geology in 1978, Guilin Institute of Technology in 1993, and officially changed its name to Guilin University of Technology in 2009. Qu Jiuhui, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a member of the National Environmental Advisory Committee, is the honorary president of the school. After more than 60 years of construction and development, the school has become a multi-disciplinary university with engineering as the main subject, engineering, science, management, literature, economics, law, art, and agriculture as the main subject, and coordinated development of graduate education, undergraduate education, higher vocational education, international education, and adult education. The school fully implements the party's education policy, follows the school motto of "virtue, learning, and innovation", inherits and promotes the spirit of Guigong of "hard work, dedication, unity and cooperation, and pioneering innovation", adheres to the school-running philosophy of "education-oriented, quality-based, talent-based, and science and technology-based", takes moral education as the fundamental task, takes serving the major needs of the country and local economic and social development as its own responsibility, and highlights the characteristics of running schools around serving the natural resources industry and high-quality industrial development. A number of landmark achievements have been made in talent training, scientific research, and social services. The school currently has four campuses in Guilin Pingfeng, Guilin Yanshan, Nanning Anji, and Nanning Airport, with a total campus area of more than 3,300 acres. The school currently has 19 secondary teaching units, 3 postdoctoral research mobile stations, 3 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 21 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, and 14 professional master's degree categories. It has the qualification to recommend outstanding undergraduate graduates to study for a master's degree without examination. There are 82 undergraduate majors, 50 higher vocational and technical college majors, and more than 45,000 full-time students of all kinds. The school currently has more than 1,900 full-time teachers, including 923 teachers with senior professional and technical positions and more than 100 doctoral supervisors. There are more than 40 national high-level experts and talents such as "National Hundred Thousand Talents Project Candidates"; more than 90 provincial and ministerial high-level talents such as Guangxi "Bagui Scholars". The school has hired Harold Kroto, the winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, as an honorary professor, and a group of well-known experts and scholars such as academicians of the two academies and Yangtze River Scholars have been hired as lecture professors and visiting professors. The school was selected as the second batch of "Universities for Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" by the Ministry of Education, and 7 subject areas and 5 undergraduate majors were included in the Ministry of Education's Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program. Five disciplines, including materials science, chemistry, engineering, environmental ecology, and earth sciences, have entered the top 1% of the ESI world discipline rankings. There are 21 national first-class professional construction sites and 16 autonomous region first-class professional construction sites; 11 national first-class undergraduate courses and 69 autonomous region first-class undergraduate courses; 15 majors have passed the engineering education professional certification (assessment), and 2 majors have passed the international professional certification. A total of 26 national undergraduate teaching projects have been obtained, including: 2 national teaching teams, 2 experimental teaching demonstration centers, 4 quality courses, 1 bilingual teaching demonstration course, 3 quality video open courses, 1 talent training model innovation experimental area, 5 characteristic majors, 1 professional comprehensive reform pilot project, 4 quality resource sharing courses, 2 virtual simulation experimental teaching centers, 1 off-campus practice education base for college students, and 1 national primary and secondary school research practice education base; 130 provincial undergraduate teaching quality engineering projects have been obtained. In 2014, it won 2 second prizes for national teaching achievements (1 hosted and 1 participated); 54 awards for the autonomous region teaching achievement awards in the last two sessions, including 2 special prizes and 18 first prizes (4 participated); and 5 national "four new" projects have been obtained. In recent years, it has undertaken more than 300 provincial education research and teaching reform projects. Teachers have edited and published more than 250 textbooks. Among them, there are 14 national planning textbooks, 6 autonomous region award-winning textbooks, 22 21st century series textbooks, and 51 other excellent and planned textbooks. The school has won 1 special prize and 17 first prizes in the National Multimedia Teaching Courseware Competition, 1 first prize in the National College English Teachers' Teaching Basic Skills Competition, 1 second prize in the National College Mathematics Micro-Course Teaching Design Competition, 1 first prize, 2 second prizes, and 16 third prizes in the National Education and Teaching Informatization Competition. The school aims to cultivate application-oriented senior specialized talents and has formed a distinctive feature. Students are highly recognized by the society for their solid professional foundation and strong practical skills. The initial employment rate of graduates has remained above 90%. In 2009, it won the honorary title of "National Advanced Collective for Employment of Graduates from Ordinary Colleges and Universities" and has been commended for employment of college graduates in Guangxi for many consecutive years. The university's innovation and entrepreneurship base and entrepreneurship park provide a new platform for improving students' innovation and entrepreneurship capabilities. The university has been recognized by the Ministry of Education as a "National Demonstration University for Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform" and a "National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Practice Base" construction unit, and has been selected as the first batch of "National Innovative Mentor Workstations". The university's innovation and entrepreneurship base has been rated as a "National University Entrepreneurship Demonstration Park"; it has standardized the organization of college students to carry out "three going to the countryside" social practice activities, and has won the title of "Advanced Social Practice Collective" for national college students for many consecutive years; in the "Challenge Cup" National College Students Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition, the total score from the sixth to the fourteenth session ranked first among Guangxi universities for nine consecutive sessions, and has achieved outstanding results in various competitions such as mathematical modeling, English competitions, geological skills, structural design, electronic design, and advertising design. It has won more than 220 national awards such as the first prize, and more than 5,680 awards at the provincial and ministerial levels. The school actively promotes and practices the core socialist values, and a number of advanced models have emerged, such as "National Advanced Class Collective", "National Outstanding Communist Youth League Member", life-saving heroes, Chinese University Students Self-improvement Star Model, China Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award Winner, and National Outstanding Youth Volunteers. There is currently one provincial and ministerial co-construction collaborative innovation center, one provincial and ministerial co-construction national key laboratory cultivation base, one key laboratory of the Ministry of Education, one engineering research center of the Ministry of Education, two academician workstations of the Guangxi government, 24 key disciplines in Guangxi (including 5 advantageous and characteristic disciplines), 5 first-class disciplines in Guangxi, 8 key laboratories in Guangxi, 6 engineering research centers in Guangxi, 1 engineering technology research center in Guangxi, 1 collaborative innovation center of Guangxi universities, 1 Guangxi international science and technology cooperation base, 2 pilot bases for the transformation of scientific and technological achievements in Guangxi, 1 Guangxi science and technology think tank, 1 key research base for humanities and social sciences in Guangxi universities, and 10 key laboratories in Guangxi universities. There are national university science and technology parks and "mass innovation spaces", and the school has been recognized as a "demonstration institution for technology transfer in the autonomous region". In recent years, it has undertaken more than 2,700 scientific research projects at the national, provincial and ministerial levels, including more than 370 national projects such as the "973" preliminary special project, the national key research and development plan, the "863" plan, the National Excellent Youth Fund Project, the National Natural Science Foundation Key Project, and the National Social Science Foundation Key Project. Since 2018, the total annual research funding has remained above 200 million yuan. The school won the National Science and Technology Progress Special Award as early as 1987; in 2011, it won one National Technological Invention Second Prize. In the past five years, it has won 64 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, including the Second Prize of the Ministry of Education's Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award (Science and Technology Progress Award), the First Prize of Guangxi Natural Science, the First Prize of Science and Technology Progress, and the First Prize of Guangxi Social Science Outstanding Achievements. The school has more than 1,000 valid invention patents and has been recognized by the State Intellectual Property Office and the Ministry of Education as a national intellectual property pilot university in 2020. The Journal of Guilin University of Technology is a national comprehensive science and technology core journal in Chinese, and has been rated as an excellent science and technology journal for national and Guangxi universities many times. The school has established friendly cooperative relations with more than 100 universities in more than 30 countries and regions, and has signed agreements on student exchange, academic exchange and scientific research cooperation with more than 50 universities. It has sent more than 2,000 students to study abroad. The pass rate of the FGA test center set up by the Royal Gemological Association of the United Kingdom has ranked first among all test centers in the world for many years, and it has been praised by the international jewelry industry. A total of more than 6,600 international students of various types have been accepted, and the average pass rate of international students in the Chinese Proficiency Test (New HSK) in China has reached more than 95%. The Kyrgyz International Students Cultural Festival in China and the "Belt and Road" International Education Development Principal Forum were successfully held. Today, the school's party leadership is strong and powerful, and all undertakings are thriving.
