Guizhou Medical University was formerly known as the National Guiyang Medical College established in 1938. It was one of the first nine higher medical schools in the country directly under the Ministry of Education. The first dean was a professor of early Chinese tropical diseases from Peking Union Medical College. Expert and medical educator Professor Li Zongen, under his leadership, Yang Chongrui, Zhu Zhanggeng, Tang Peisong, Jia Kui, Yang Jishi, Liu Weide, Hong Qian, Lin Shaowen, Hou Baozhang, Zhang Xiaoqian, Guo Bingkuan, Wang Jiwu, Zhu Maogen, Li Ruilin, Li Yi, Wang Zhijun, etc. A large number of well-known domestic experts and scholars with superb academic attainments gathered at the National Guiyang Medical College, making it known as the "Little Concorde" at that time and pioneering higher education in Guizhou. In 1950, the "National Guiyang Medical College" was renamed "Guiyang Medical College" and placed under the management of the Guizhou Provincial People's Government. In 1965, the "Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Guiyang Medical College" was separated to form the "Guiyang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine"; in 1981, it became the first in the country. It was approved as a master's degree-granting unit; in 2003, it became a doctoral degree-granting unit; in April 2015, it was renamed "Guizhou Medical University" and is a counterpart supporting university of Soochow University and Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College. The school covers an area of 3,278 acres, with 4 directly affiliated hospitals, 8 non-directly affiliated hospitals, 12 teaching hospitals, and 133 non-clinical professional practice teaching bases. It has multiple scientific research platforms and innovation teams, including 9 national-level platforms such as national key laboratories jointly built by the province and the ministry, and 58 provincial-ministerial platforms. The school currently has 21 teaching units and 47 undergraduate majors. There are 4 doctoral degree authorization points, including 3 doctoral degree authorization points in first-level disciplines (basic medicine, public health and preventive medicine, pharmacy), and 1 doctoral degree authorization point in the professional degree category (clinical medicine). There are 18 master's degree authorization points, including 10 first-level master's degree authorization points and 8 professional degree master's degree authorization points. Independently set up one interdisciplinary doctoral degree authorization point (molecular medicine) and one master's degree authorization point (intelligent medicine). There are 1 first-class domestic construction disciplines in Guizhou Province, 5 first-class disciplines in Guizhou Province, 4 first-class disciplines in Guizhou Province’s characteristic key disciplines, 2 first-class disciplines in Guizhou Province’s key disciplines; 6 national key clinical specialty construction projects, There are 3 postdoctoral research mobile stations. Clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology are among the top 1% of ESI globally. There are 10 national-level first-class professional construction sites and 20 provincial-level first-class professional construction sites. In 2019, with the support of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, a clinical medical education reform and innovation class - "Peking Union Class" was launched, becoming the first clinical medicine elite class in Guizhou Province. The school currently has 28,532 full-time students (including 24,232 undergraduates, 4,125 graduate students, and 175 international students). At present, it has trained more than 75,000 full-time graduates for the society (including more than 9,000 graduate students). The school has more than 2,000 faculty and staff, including 1,806 full-time teachers (908 with doctorate degrees and 935 teachers with senior professional and technical positions). There are 14 experts with special allowances from the State Council, 6 young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions to national health and family planning, 10 core experts from Guizhou Province, and 24 experts from Guizhou Province. From January 2016 to December 2023, he won 45 national and provincial scientific research awards, including 1 second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 Guizhou Province Highest Technology Award, 6 first prizes of the Provincial Science and Technology Award, 1 first prize of the Provincial Outstanding Achievement Award for Philosophy and Social Sciences. It has undertaken more than 3,900 vertical scientific research projects at all levels, including 703 National Natural Science Foundation projects. The number of projects is increasing year by year, from 48 projects in 2016 to 126 projects in 2023. In endemic disease research, traditional Chinese medicine and ethnic medicine research and development, Tissue engineering stem cell biomedical research, pathogen biology research, scientific research results transformation and other fields have obvious characteristics. The school gives full play to its advantages in teaching, research, and medicine, and always takes serving local economic and social development as its mission. It has established the largest medical service system in the province, plays an important role in emergency medical rescue, treatment of difficult and critical patients, drug clinical trials, and improvement of public health literacy, and has made positive contributions to the development of local medical and health undertakings.
