Harbin Institute of Technology was founded in 1920. In 1951, it was identified as one of the two model universities in the country to learn from foreign higher education models. In 1954, it was included in the first batch of six key universities in the country and was known as the "cradle of engineers". The school was included in the first batch of key universities in the national "211 Project" in 1996, and was identified as one of the first nine universities in the national "985 Project" in 1999. In 2000, it merged with Harbin University of Architecture, which has the same origin, to form a new Harbin Institute of Technology. In 2017, it was selected into the list of Class A universities in the "Double First-Class" construction, and in 2022, 8 disciplines were selected into the new round of "Double First-Class" construction list. Harbin Institute of Technology Shenzhen Campus is jointly built by Harbin Institute of Technology and the Shenzhen Municipal Government. It focuses on full-time undergraduate and graduate education and is supplemented by part-time education. It is the first high-level campus with a complete undergraduate, master and doctoral training system held in Shenzhen for the national "985 Project" construction universities and "Double First-Class" construction Class A universities. In the process of running the school, the campus has always insisted on taking root in Shenzhen, facing the major needs of the country, standing on the international academic frontier, closely combining with the strategic goals of economic and social development of Guangdong Province and Shenzhen City, implementing the requirements of the integrated development of "one school and three districts" of Harbin Institute of Technology, and carrying out various tasks such as party building and ideological and political education, talent training, faculty team building, academic research, and international cooperation and exchange. At present, Harbin Institute of Technology Shenzhen Campus has 11 colleges and 4 research institutes, with a total of more than 600 full-time teachers, more than 150 part-time teachers, more than 144 postdoctoral fellows, and nearly 9,000 full-time students, including more than 4,500 undergraduates and more than 4,400 master and doctoral students. Led by more than 20 academicians of the two academies, including Liu Yongtan, Du Shanyi, Zhou Yu, Ou Jinping, Fang Binxing, Wei Fengsi, Ren Nanqi, and Han Jiecai, Harbin Institute of Technology Shenzhen Campus has formed a talent pattern of "master + team" led by academicians and "four youths" as the main body. Among the full-time teachers, 99 have been selected for the national talent plan, and 575 have been selected for the local talent plan. Nearly 80% have overseas study or work experience, and nearly 90% are high-level talents at all levels recognized by the state and Shenzhen Municipal Government. Part-time teachers are composed of high-level experts and scholars from world-renowned universities and research institutes. Nearly 20 top domestic and foreign experts such as Gong Qihuang, Lv Yueguang, and Yue Qingrui, academicians of the two Chinese academies, have been hired as chief academic advisors of the Shenzhen Campus of Harbin Institute of Technology. In the process of running the school, the Shenzhen Campus of Harbin Institute of Technology has always adhered to the major needs of the country and the international academic frontier. With reference to the professional structure of world-renowned science and engineering colleges, the Shenzhen Campus of Harbin Institute of Technology has adjusted and condensed the discipline direction in a targeted manner, actively supported and developed emerging disciplines and interdisciplinary disciplines, and implemented a training model of professional enrollment, professional training, and professional graduation. There are currently six disciplines: science, engineering, management, economics, literature, and art. Among the 24 first-level disciplines, there are 8 national first-level key disciplines, 14 national fourth-round discipline evaluation Class A disciplines, and 8 national "double first-class" construction disciplines. "Strong foundation, strong practice, strict process, and innovation", Harbin Institute of Technology Shenzhen Campus adheres to the mature and advanced talent training concept of Harbin Institute of Technology, relying on the geographical advantages of being adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao, and relying on the favorable conditions of subject integration and resource sharing in Shenzhen University City, to continuously supply the country with top innovative talents with global competence. Up to now, Harbin Institute of Technology Shenzhen Campus has trained more than 22,000 students. Graduates are mainly employed in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Beijing-Tianjin-Shanghai and other regions. More than 60% of graduates are employed in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area; more than 70% of graduates are employed in well-known companies such as Huawei, Tencent, and Mindray. Harbin Institute of Technology Shenzhen Campus attaches great importance to student innovation and entrepreneurship. More than 100 enterprises have been founded by graduates of all years, 89% of which are technology-based enterprises, and 85% of which were founded in Shenzhen. A number of national high-tech enterprises, high-output value companies, new third board listed companies and "unicorn" companies have emerged, including Liqun Automation Technology Co., Ltd., Suteng Juchuang Technology Co., Ltd., and Kuaikan World Technology Co., Ltd. HIT Shenzhen Campus is committed to promoting scientific and technological progress and technological innovation. Relying on the profound academic accumulation of the school, Shenzhen's superior innovation and entrepreneurship environment and industrial strategic layout, it has established a number of high-level scientific research platforms, and the key research areas have always kept pace with scientific and technological development and international academic frontiers. HIT Shenzhen Campus currently has a total of 58 scientific research platforms at all levels, including 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, 1 key laboratory of Guangdong Province, 1 key laboratory of Guangdong Province's general colleges and universities, 1 Guangdong Province's general colleges and universities' characteristic new think tank, 1 Guangdong Province's engineering technology research center, 1 Shenzhen Nobel Prize laboratory, 20 Shenzhen key laboratories, 18 Shenzhen engineering laboratories, 8 Shenzhen public service platforms, 1 Shenzhen engineering research center, 1 Shenzhen key research base for humanities and social sciences and 3 innovation institutions in Nanshan District, Shenzhen. At present, the pace of scientific research and innovation of HIT Shenzhen Campus continues to accelerate, and the construction of a key laboratory cluster is being accelerated, including 5 "one room and two zones" national key laboratories and 3 academician platforms; as one of the first 4 Guangdong laboratories started to be built in Guangdong Province, Guangdong Cyberspace Science and Technology Laboratory (Pengcheng Laboratory) was built with HIT Shenzhen Campus as the main supporting unit in the initial stage of its launch, and will become an important support for our school's information disciplines in the future; the space environment and material action research facilities and Harbin devices complement each other and form a north-south echo; the Sovich Intelligent New Materials Laboratory was established, and the International Design Institute began to enter the fast lane of construction. HIT Shenzhen Campus is a test field for HIT's higher education reform, a bridgehead for gathering high-end talents, and a demonstration area for international education. It is an important part of HIT's goal of "Chinese characteristics, world-class, and HIT standards", an important member of Shenzhen's higher education system, and a new force in building a pilot demonstration area of socialism with Chinese characteristics and creating a model of a socialist modern power city.
