Hebei University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was founded in 1956. It was originally named Hebei College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The school was located in Baoding, Hebei Province. In 1957, it began to recruit undergraduate students majoring in traditional Chinese medicine. In 1958, it was named Hebei College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 1962, it merged with Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and was named Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which was affiliated to Hebei Province. In 1969, Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine moved to Shijiazhuang City as a whole and merged with Hebei Medical College to form Hebei New Medical University. In 1983, it resumed its independent setting and began to recruit students. In 1995, it merged with Hebei Medical College and Shijiazhuang Medical College to form Hebei Medical University. In 2013, Hebei College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was restored. On June 6, 2023, it was approved by the Ministry of Education and renamed Hebei University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Over the past 60 years since its establishment, despite the division and merger, undergraduate education in traditional Chinese medicine has continued to develop, cultivating tens of thousands of outstanding talents including Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Shi Xuemin, Wu Yiling, Zhang Yingze, and National Medical Masters Li Shimao and Li Diangui. It is now a university jointly built by the People's Government of Hebei Province and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a key university in Hebei Province, a "double first-class" university in Hebei Province, a doctoral degree-granting institution, a pilot university for the reform of the Ministry of Education's Excellent Doctor (TCM) Education and Training Program, and a "5+3" integrated training institution for TCM majors. It has the qualification to recommend outstanding undergraduate graduates to study for postgraduate degrees without examination. The school has four campuses: Xingyuan, Juquan, Qizhou, and Dongyuan, with a total area of 596,855.63 square meters (895.28 acres) and a building area of 321,900 square meters. The main campus is Xingyuan Campus, located on Xingyuan Road, Luquan District, Shijiazhuang City, with an elegant environment and pleasant scenery; Juquan Campus is located on Xinshi South Road, Qiaoxi District, Shijiazhuang City, adjacent to the railway station, with convenient transportation; Qizhou Campus is located in Anguo City, a thousand-year-old medicine capital, with a strong TCM culture and obvious location advantages; Dongyuan Campus is located on Zhongshan Road, Shijiazhuang City, and is the main position for clinical teaching. The total value of teaching and scientific research equipment is 283 million yuan. The library has a collection of more than 999,700 paper books, including 22,800 thread-bound ancient books and 1,354 rare books. There are 2 directly affiliated hospitals, 21 non-directly affiliated hospitals, 40 teaching hospitals, 7 community practice teaching bases, 21 pharmacy professional practice bases, and 20 other practice training bases, of which 5 have been approved as provincial postgraduate practice training bases. The school has 12 teaching institutions including the School of Basic Medicine, the School of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, the School of Acupuncture and Massage, the School of Pharmacy, the School of Nursing, the School of Graduate Studies, the School of Continuing Education, the School of International Education, the School of Marxism, the School of Clinical Medicine, the Department of Physical Education, and the Department of Humanities Management. A multi-level and multi-type school-running pattern has been formed, including general undergraduate education, graduate education, education for international students, and adult education. There are 9,896 full-time students, including 8,668 general undergraduates and 1,228 master and doctoral students. It has 7 key disciplines of TCM of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 3 high-level key disciplines of TCM of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 2 key disciplines of Hebei Province, 3 first-class discipline construction projects of Hebei Province, 6 key disciplines of TCM jointly built by the People's Government of Hebei Province and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 2 key disciplines of TCM in Hebei Province, 4 national key clinical specialties (TCM majors), 7 key specialties of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and 12 key TCM specialties in Hebei Province. It has two first-level doctoral degree authorization points in Chinese medicine and integrated Chinese and Western medicine, and a professional degree authorization category for doctor of Chinese medicine, three first-level master's degree authorization points in Chinese medicine, integrated Chinese and Western medicine, and Chinese pharmacy, and three professional master's degree authorization categories in Chinese medicine, Chinese pharmacy, and nursing, covering a total of 24 doctoral degree authorization points and 28 master's degree authorization points. The school has built a relatively complete scientific research and innovation platform service system, with 1 National Chinese Medicine Clinical Research Base; 1 Key Research Office of Chinese Medicine of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 6 key laboratories of Hebei Province, 1 engineering laboratory, 1 engineering research center, 6 technology innovation centers, 1 industrial technology research institute, 3 international science and technology cooperation bases; 1 Hebei Provincial Collaborative Innovation Center, 1 Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences of Colleges and Universities, and 1 Applied Technology R&D Center of Colleges and Universities. The school currently has 3,031 faculty and staff members (including directly affiliated units), including 865 in the school headquarters, 1,872 in the First Affiliated Hospital, 206 in the Second Affiliated Hospital, and 88 in the Provincial Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The school has 766 full-time teachers, including 196 senior teachers (including 158 professors), 249 associate senior teachers, 240 doctoral degree holders, and 435 master's degree holders. The school has a team of graduate tutors with profound academic background, including 61 doctoral tutors and 517 master's tutors. The university has a group of well-known doctors and teachers with profound knowledge and high reputation. Professors Li Shimao and Li Diangui were awarded the honorary title of "National Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine" in 2014 and 2017 respectively. Professors Li Diangui and Fang Chaoyi were named "National Famous Teachers of TCM Colleges and Universities" in December 2016. Professor Mei Jianqiang was awarded the honorary titles of "National Outstanding Communist Party Member" and "National Outstanding Advanced Individual in Anti-epidemic" in September 2020. At the same time, the university has more than 100 experts in various talent projects, including experts with special government allowances from the State Council, national famous Chinese medicine practitioners, national candidates for "New Century Hundreds of Thousands of Talents", national instructors for the inheritance of academic experience of old Chinese medicine experts, national outstanding teachers, national young Qihuang scholars, national outstanding clinical talents of traditional Chinese medicine, provincial outstanding experts, provincial teaching masters, etc. The results of the "National General College Teachers' Teaching Competition Analysis Report (2012-2020)" released by the China Higher Education Society show that our school ranks first in the total score of the teaching competition status data of newly built undergraduate colleges and universities in the country. The school adheres to opening up to the outside world and is one of the earliest universities in the province to carry out international exchanges and cooperation. It co-founded the first Confucius Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Latin America with the Federal University of Goiás, Brazil, and established friendly cooperative relations with 20 universities, medical research institutions and international organizations in more than ten countries. Actively participate in the "Belt and Road" education action, and carry out academic exchanges with South Korea, the United States, New Zealand, Brazil and many other countries. It is an influential province of traditional Chinese medicine in the country.
