Baotou Medical College was founded in 1958. In the years like a song, generations of Baotou Medical College people have adhered to the school motto of "unity, dedication, truth-seeking and innovation", worked together to cultivate medical talents for the country with passion and loyalty, and spread the hope of health and health in the frontier of the motherland. As one of the earliest general undergraduate higher medical colleges established in the frontier ethnic areas of New China, Baotou Medical College enrolled five-year undergraduate students in clinical medicine in the year of its establishment. In 1959 and 1961, Baotou Health School and Inner Mongolia Health Cadre Training College were successively merged into Baotou Medical College. In June 2003, the Ministry of Education decided to merge Baotou Medical College with Baotou Iron and Steel Institute and Baotou Normal College to form Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology. In February 2005, the People's Government of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region approved the division of Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology into three independent legal entities, and the school was named Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology Baotou Medical College. The school is located in Baotou City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, which is known as the "Grassland Steel City" and the "Rare Earth Capital". It currently has two campuses, Donghe and Qingshan. The school covers an area of 700,000 square meters and a building area of 301,900 square meters. After more than 60 years of construction and development, the school has now formed a multi-level school-running pattern of full-time undergraduate education, graduate education, continuing education and vocational education, and a discipline system with medicine as the main subject, law, education, literature, science, management and engineering coordinated development. In 1997, it passed the undergraduate teaching qualification evaluation of the former State Education Commission, and was rated as "excellent" in the undergraduate teaching level evaluation of the Ministry of Education in 2008. In 2017, it accepted the review and evaluation of undergraduate teaching by the Ministry of Education, and passed the clinical medicine professional certification of the Ministry of Education in 2020. There are 28 undergraduate majors, including 1 national first-class professional construction site and 10 autonomous region first-class undergraduate major construction sites. There are 5 autonomous region-level brand majors and 2 autonomous region-level key construction majors. The preventive medicine major is a national characteristic professional construction site and the first batch of local higher education professional comprehensive reform pilot projects of the Ministry of Education. It has 3 national first-class undergraduate courses and 18 autonomous region-level first-class undergraduate courses.
