The history of Nanjing Tech University can be traced back to the Sanjiang Normal School founded in 1902. In 2001, it was established by the merger of Nanjing University of Chemical Technology of the Ministry of Chemical Industry and Nanjing Institute of Architecture and Civil Engineering of the Ministry of Construction. It is the first batch of universities led by the National "Innovation Capacity Improvement Plan for Higher Education Institutions" (2011 Plan) and a Class A university in the Jiangsu High-level University Construction Peak Plan. The school adheres to the school motto of "Mingde, Houxue, Shenjian, and Dingxing", insists on running a university rooted in the land of China, and has formed a distinctive feature of collaborative innovation between industry, academia and research. The school has 11 departments, 28 colleges, and more than 40,000 students of various types. It covers 9 disciplines including engineering, science, management, economics, literature, law, medicine, art, and education. In the fourth round of national subject evaluation, the chemical engineering and technology discipline was rated A, and the materials science and engineering and safety science and engineering disciplines were rated B+. So far, seven disciplines of the school, including chemistry, materials science, engineering, biology and biochemistry, environmental science and ecology, physics, and agricultural science, have entered the top 1% of the global essential science indicators (ESI). Among them, chemistry and materials science have entered the top 1‰ of ESI globally, both ranking 74th in the world. The school's comprehensive ESI ranking has entered the top 1‰ globally, ranking 55th among universities in mainland China. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024 ranked the university in mainland China at 38th place; the Nature Index ranked the university in mainland China at 43rd place; the Soft Science 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities ranked the university in the top 300 in the world, ranking the university in mainland China at 38th place. The school currently has more than 3,300 faculty and staff, with more than 1,600 senior professionals, including 11 academicians of the two academies, 1 member of the 8th State Council Discipline Evaluation Group, 182 national talents, 15 national high-level talent teams, 384 provincial and ministerial key high-level talents, and 43 provincial and ministerial key high-level teams. The school insists on educating people for the party and cultivating talents for the country. Over the years, the school has trained more than 20 provincial and ministerial leaders, more than 30 academicians, more than 100 leaders of central enterprises and listed companies, and has provided more than 300,000 high-quality talents to the society. The school has strong scientific research strength. It has 8 national scientific research platforms, including the National Key Laboratory of Materials Chemical Engineering, the National International Joint Research Center for Flexible Electronic Materials and Devices, the National Biochemical Engineering Technology Research Center, the National Special Separation Membrane Engineering Technology Research Center, the National Heat Pipe Technology Research and Promotion Center, the National University Science and Technology Park, the Jiangsu Advanced Biological and Chemical Manufacturing Collaborative Innovation Center, and the National High-Performance Membrane Materials Innovation Center, 36 provincial and ministerial research centers, and 28 provincial and ministerial key laboratories. Since the 13th Five-Year Plan, the school's scientific research projects and achievements have won more than 400 awards at all levels and types, including 2 second prizes of the National Technological Invention Award, 3 second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 second prize of the National Natural Science Award, 7 China Patent Awards, and 2 selected as the "Top Ten Scientific and Technological Advances in Chinese Higher Education Institutions" by the Ministry of Education. One person won the National Innovation Medal, two people won the National Innovation Certificate, and seven people won the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Award. The school attaches great importance to the transformation of scientific research results. Actively connect the innovation chain with the industrial chain to promote in-depth cooperation between industry, academia and research. The Technology Transfer Center of Nanjing Tech University is a national technology transfer demonstration institution. It promotes the integration of school and local government, industry and education, and has established dozens of new R&D institutions, industrial research institutes and industrial colleges in cooperation with local governments. There is currently one national modern industrial college and three provincial key industrial colleges. The school strengthens school-enterprise cooperation and carries out strategic cooperation with central enterprises and industry leading enterprises such as China Construction Co., Ltd., China Petrochemical Corporation, Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., ZTE Corporation, and China Resources Co., Ltd.
