Peking University School of Medicine is located in Haidian District, Beijing. Its predecessor was the National Beijing Medical College founded in 1912. It was the first national medical school founded by the Chinese government on its own to specialize in teaching Western medicine. In 1996, it passed the demonstration of the first batch of national "211 Project" construction projects. In 2000, it merged with Peking University and launched the "985" plan in the same year.
