The history of Shandong First Medical University (Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences) can be traced back to the first government-run medical college in Shandong Province, Shandong Provincial Medical Institute, which was founded in 1915. It has gone through the historical development periods of Shandong Provincial Medical College, Shandong Provincial Medical College, East China Bethune Medical College, Shandong Medical College, Shandong Medical College Loude Branch, and Taishan Medical College. In 2017, the Shandong Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government implemented the reform of integrating science and education and decided to establish Qilu Medical University (under preparation). With the approval of the Ministry of Education, in February 2019, Shandong First Medical University, which was formed by the integration of Taishan Medical College, Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences, Shandong Provincial Hospital, and Shandong Qianfoshan Hospital, was officially established. At the same time, it was named Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences, opening a new chapter of focusing on reform and innovation and striving to create a first-class university. The school (institute) is a key university in Shandong Province and the largest medical science research institution in Shandong Province. In 2020, it was selected as a "first-class" university in the Shandong Province High-level University Construction Project. The school (institute) has campuses in Jinan and Tai'an. The main campus is located in the core area of Jinan International Medical Center (No. 6699, Qingdao Road, Jinan City). There are research institutions in Jinan, Qingdao, Jining and other places, covering a total area of more than 6,000 acres. There are more than 19,000 employees (including affiliated hospitals), including 9 academicians of the two academies (including 5 dual-appointed academicians), 2 overseas academicians, 84 national talents such as those selected for the National Overseas Key Talent Project, the National High-level Talent Special Support Program, the New Century Hundred Thousand Talents Project, the National Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions, the National Outstanding Youth, the National Excellent Youth, the experts enjoying special allowances from the State Council, and the National Excellent Teachers, and 384 provincial and ministerial talents such as the Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions from the National Health Commission, the Taishan Scholars Climbing Program Experts, the Taishan Scholars Specially Appointed Experts, the Taishan Scholars Young Experts, the Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions in Shandong Province, and the Shandong Province Teaching Masters; 4,338 people with senior professional titles and 2,727 people with doctoral degrees. The school (institute) has a complete talent training system for undergraduate, master and doctoral degrees. At present, it has 1 first-level discipline authorized for doctoral degrees, 8 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degrees, 8 master's professional degree authorization categories, and 94 master's degree authorization points. There are 53 undergraduate majors, including 5 national first-class undergraduate major construction points and 23 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction points; 4 national characteristic majors and 8 provincial characteristic majors; 5 provincial high-level application-oriented construction majors (groups), 1 Shandong Province's new and old kinetic energy conversion docking industry professional group, and 3 provincial excellent engineer education and training program pilot majors. 27 courses have been approved as national and provincial first-class undergraduate courses, and 8 courses have been selected as provincial ideological and political courses "golden courses" and course ideological and political demonstration courses. At present, there are more than 25,000 full-time students in the school, including more than 22,000 undergraduates, more than 3,300 graduate students, and more than 400 international students. Nine disciplines, including clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology, biology and biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics, neuroscience and behavior, chemistry, immunology, microbiology, and general social sciences, are ranked in the top 1% of the ESI global ranking, among which clinical medicine is ranked in the top 0.8‰ of the ESI global ranking, ranking 8th among independent medical schools in China. The Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences ranks 7th among independent medical schools in China in terms of scientific and technological value. One discipline was selected as a "peak discipline" construction discipline of Shandong Province's high-level disciplines, one discipline was selected as a high-level discipline cultivation discipline in Shandong Province, and six disciplines were selected as key disciplines in Shandong Province. There are more than 60 high-level innovation platforms at or above the provincial and ministerial level, including national key laboratories, provincial and ministerial co-construction national key laboratory cultivation bases, key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, key laboratories of the National Health Commission, and provincial key laboratories; there are 3 postdoctoral research workstations. In the past five years, the university has won 1 second prize of the National Natural Science Award, 3 second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 2 Science and Technology Progress Awards of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation, 2 Shandong Province Science and Technology Highest Awards, and 11 first prizes of Shandong Province Science and Technology Awards. It has many affiliated hospitals and has formed a medical system in Shandong, directly serving more than 30 million people each year. It has 16 national key clinical specialties, 1 high-level key discipline of traditional Chinese medicine of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and 7 national drug clinical trial institutions. In the Fudan University version of the Chinese Hospital Specialty Reputation Ranking, 13 specialties are among the top ten in the country or nominated. It was the first in the country to basically eliminate kala-azar, filariasis, malaria, and leprosy on a provincial basis, winning the "four consecutive championships" in the history of disease elimination in New China. Among them, filariasis prevention and control was praised by the World Health Organization (WHO) as "China's successful experience" and "creative results". At present, it guides the province to carry out prevention and control of occupational diseases, skin diseases, parasitic diseases, early diagnosis and treatment of tumors, radiation protection, prevention and treatment of blindness, and rare diseases; it has a World Health Organization Cooperation Center. The school (institute) is one of the first institutions to award Shandong Provincial Government Scholarships for Foreign Students. Since 2004, it has recruited undergraduate and master's students from more than 40 countries and regions such as the United States, South Korea, and India, and has a good reputation for international education. It has established good cooperative relations with universities and medical and scientific research institutions in more than 30 countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, and Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. Under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the school (institute) will fully implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and vigorously implement the "three-step" strategy and the "135 Project" in accordance with the development blueprint outlined by the first party congress of the school (institute). The "135 Project" is to adhere to the core of strengthening the party building of the school (institute), consolidate the "three major constructions of talents, disciplines, and culture", and implement the "five improvement plans for education, scientific research, medical care, internationalization, and school (institute) governance".
