Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in my country and well-known at home and abroad. It is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education and jointly established with Shanghai Municipality. Sheng Xuanhuai, a famous industrialist and educator in modern China, founded Nanyang Public School, the predecessor of Jiaotong University, in Shanghai in 1896, adhering to the belief that "the first step in self-improvement is to cultivate talents, and to cultivate talents, we must first establish schools." At the beginning of its establishment, the school established the purpose of "seeking practical learning and being pragmatic in industry" and took the cultivation of "first-class talents" as its educational goal. The school is known as the "MIT of the East". During the Anti-Japanese War, teachers and students went through many hardships, moved to concessions, moved inland to Chongqing, and persisted in running schools. Many students joined the army and fought bloody battles. On the eve of liberation, teachers and students actively participated in the democratic revolution, and the school was known as the "fortress of democracy." In the early days of the founding of New China, in order to meet the needs of national economic construction and build the higher education system of New China, the school adjusted a considerable number of advantageous majors, teachers and equipment to support the development of domestic brother universities. In the mid-1950s, the school responded to the country's call to build the northwest, and experienced westward migration and division, and was divided into the Shanghai Jiaotong University part and the Xi'an part. In March 1959, both parts were listed as national key universities at the same time. In July, they were established independently with the approval of the State Council. The Shanghai part of Jiaotong University was named "Shanghai Jiaotong University". In the 1960s and 1970s, the school came under the leadership of the National Defense Science and Technology Commission and the Sixth Ministry of Machinery Industry. It actively participated in the training of national defense personnel and national defense scientific research, and made great contributions to the "two bombs and one satellite" and national defense modernization. It has restored and built science, management, life, law and humanities. In 1999, Shanghai Agricultural College was merged; in 2005, it merged with Shanghai Second Medical University. At this point, the school has completed the discipline layout of a comprehensive university. In recent years, through the construction of the national "985 Project", "211 Project" and "Double First-Class Special Project", the school has gradually gathered high-level talents, rapidly improved its scientific research strength, and realized the transformation into a research-oriented university. At the same time, the school has made important breakthroughs in implementing its internationalization strategy through cooperation with world-class universities such as the University of Michigan in the United States. Construction of the Minhang campus began in 1985. After more than 30 years, a modern university campus with complete facilities and a beautiful environment has been basically built, and the transfer of the focus of education to the Minhang campus has been completed; the school currently has Xuhui, Minhang, Huangpu, Changning, Pudong, Chongming, etc. The campus covers a total area of more than 3 million square meters.
