The predecessor of Shanxi Medical University was Shanxi Medical Training Institute, which was founded in the ancient city of Bingzhou in 1919. In 1932, it was changed to the private Shanxi Chuanzhi Medical College. In 1940, it was renamed Shanxi University Medical College. In 1946, it was upgraded to the National Shanxi University School of Medicine. After the founding of New China, the school entered a new period of development. In 1953, it was established independently and renamed Shanxi Medical College. In 1996, it was renamed Shanxi Medical University. The school is the third batch of doctoral degree-granting institutions in the country and the first batch of master's degree-granting institutions in the country, the first batch of bachelor's degree-granting institutions in the country, the first batch of "Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program" pilot units of the Ministry of Education, one of the first eight medical schools in the country to restore the undergraduate major of pediatrics, a university supported by the National Central and Western College Basic Capacity Construction Project, a university building a high-level public health college, and a national innovation and entrepreneurship college construction unit. After 104 years of construction and development, the university has become a medical university with medicine as the main focus, combining medicine and engineering, medicine and science, medicine and literature, and medicine and management, and has a complete talent training system with undergraduate education as the main focus and undergraduate, master and doctoral levels. It has formed the school motto of "extensive medical science, high moral ability", the school spirit of "dedication, pragmatism, unity and progress" and the spirit of "truth-seeking, diligence, tenacity and perseverance". The school currently has three campuses in Chuanzhi, Yingze and Zhongdu, covering a total area of 1,422 acres and a building area of 710,000 square meters. There are 40 teaching institutions including the First Clinical Medical College, the Second Clinical Medical College, the Third Clinical Medical College, the Fifth Clinical Medical College, the Basic Medical College, the School of Public Health, the School of Pharmacy, the School of Forensic Medicine, and the School of Nursing, 64 affiliated and teaching hospitals including the First Hospital, the Second Hospital, the Third Hospital, the Fifth Hospital, the Stomatological Hospital, the Mental Health Hospital, and the Pulmonary Hospital, 125 other teaching bases, 15 postgraduate training bases, and 2 scientific research bases. The university has more than 7,000 teaching and medical staff, more than 2,000 graduate tutors, and more than 2,200 clinical teachers. It has more than 430 national, provincial and ministerial experts and high-level talents, including winners of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, winners of the Excellent Youth Fund, leading experts of the National "Ten Thousand Talents Program", chief scientists of the National Key R&D Program, personnel enjoying special government allowances, experts with outstanding contributions at the national level, senior experts in contact with the central government, national candidates of the "New Century Hundred Thousand Talents Project", outstanding talents of the Ministry of Education in the new century, members of the Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, national famous teachers, and chairmen of the Specialty Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, as well as 24 national and provincial teaching teams, including the National Excellent Teaching Team. The school currently has 1 national key discipline - Physiology; 2 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education - Cell Physiology Laboratory, Key Laboratory of Coal Environmental Pathogenesis and Prevention; 1 provincial and ministerial collaborative innovation center - Molecular Imaging Precision Diagnosis and Treatment Collaborative Innovation Center; 1 key laboratory of the National Health Commission - Key Laboratory of Pneumoconiosis; 1 Ministry of Education Medical Basic Research Innovation Center - Chronic Kidney Disease Medical Basic Innovation Center; 3 national demonstration centers - Clinical Skills Training Center, Basic Medical Experimental Teaching Center, Clinical Teaching Training Demonstration Center; 21 national clinical key specialties - Critical Care Medicine, Urology, Traditional Chinese Medicine Nursing, Orthopedics, Nephrology, General Surgery, Geriatrics, Emergency Medicine, Rheumatology and Immunology, Nursing, Pathology, Ophthalmology, Cardiovascular Medicine, Neurosurgery, Respiratory Medicine; 15 provincial-level advantageous, characteristic, and key disciplines; 64 provincial-level key teaching and research platforms. The school currently has 12 national first-class undergraduate professional construction points - clinical medicine, preventive medicine, forensic medicine, pharmacy, nursing, anesthesiology, stomatology, medical laboratory technology, pediatrics, basic medicine, clinical pharmacy, health inspection and quarantine. 5 national characteristic professional construction points. Clinical medicine (five-year system), clinical medicine (rural directional free students), and nursing majors are the first batch of national "undergraduate teaching project" of the Ministry of Education. The local college undergraduate major comprehensive reform pilot majors. The school has 32 undergraduate majors, including clinical medicine (five-year system, "5+3" integrated), preventive medicine, forensic medicine, stomatology, pediatrics, medical imaging, anesthesiology, nursing, psychiatry, optometry, and pharmacy. The school's students come from 33 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions across the country (Tibet does not enroll students). At present, there are 22,201 full-time students, including 14,518 ordinary undergraduates, 6,447 master's students, 758 doctoral students, and 478 international students. Since 2019, our students have won the gold medal in the main track project of the China International "Internet+" College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition for three consecutive years. It is the only medical undergraduate university in the country to have won this honor. Since its establishment, the school has trained more than 140,000 medical and health professionals represented by Zhao Xuefang, the first winner of the "Bethune Medal" in the country and "the people's good doctor", Xu Jianguo and Tian Zhigang, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Yang Hui and Zhang Yinghui, winners of the Nightingale Medal. The school's scientific research development momentum is good. In 2023, the total science and technology funding will reach 380 million yuan; 389 science and technology projects above the provincial level will be undertaken, including 1 major project of the National Key R&D Program, 51 National Natural Science Foundation projects (including 1 major project of regional joint fund integration and 2 key projects of regional joint fund), and 2 projects of the Ministry of Education in humanities and social sciences; 4,104 scientific research papers have been published, including 1,923 papers included in SCI; 530 patents have been authorized; and 26 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards have been won. The school actively carries out international exchanges and cooperation. It has established cooperative relations with universities and institutions in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Japan, Russia, Australia, Greece, Switzerland and other countries; implemented the "Overseas Training Program for Young Backbone Teachers" and "Overseas Training Program for Doctoral Students", and carried out projects such as "1+1+1 Joint Training for Master's Students"; and carried out extensive teacher-student exchanges and international scientific research cooperation. The school has been passed down for a hundred years, and several generations have worked hard and achieved brilliant achievements. The school will seize the opportunities of the national "Double First-Class" construction, the implementation of Shanxi's "1331" project, the construction of Healthy China and Healthy Shanxi, and the acceleration of innovative development of medical education.
