Taiyuan University was formerly known as the New Taiyuan University, which was formed by the merger of the former Taiyuan University, Taiyuan Normal School, and Taiyuan Education College in December 2002. In April 2013, it was upgraded to a full-time comprehensive undergraduate college with the approval of the Ministry of Education and renamed Taiyuan University. The college obtained the right to confer bachelor's degrees in 2017 and became one of the first batch of applied undergraduate colleges in Shanxi Province in 2022. The college is led by the People's Government of Shanxi Province, managed by the People's Government of Taiyuan City, and guided by the Shanxi Provincial Department of Education. The college is located in Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi Province, a gathering place for the cultural heritage of Shanxi Province, the ancient capital of Shanxi Province with a 2,500-year history of city construction. The college has obvious geographical advantages and consists of three campuses: Fendong Campus, Binhe Campus, and Fudong Campus. Fendong Campus is located in the core of the central Shanxi urban agglomeration, Taiyuan metropolitan area, and the Shanxi Province Transformation and Comprehensive Reform Demonstration Zone, with smooth information and convenient transportation. The college covers an area of 1,658 mu, with a building area of more than 440,000 square meters. The total value of teaching and scientific research equipment is 118 million yuan. The college enrolls students from 25 provinces (municipalities, autonomous regions) across the country, and currently has 15,504 full-time students. The red gene has created the unique culture of Taiyuan. The history of Taiyuan College can be traced back to the "Shanxi Official Normal School" established in 1905, the "Shanxi Provincial Women's Normal School" established in 1910, and the "Shanxi Provincial National Normal School" established in 1919. These schools have a long history of running schools and profound cultural heritage. They are known as the "cradle of talents" and "melting pot of revolution." The older generation of proletarian revolutionaries Xu Xiangqian, Bo Yibo, Cheng Zihua, Li Xuefeng, Wang Shiying and modern and contemporary female writers and revolutionary activists Shi Pingmei once studied here, received Marxist-Leninist enlightenment here, and embarked on the road of revolution. Inherit and carry forward fine traditions and revolutionary culture. After long-term cultural accumulation and sublimation, the college has nurtured the school motto of "erudition, perseverance, action, and perfection", and formed a school spirit of "uprightness, encouragement, hard work, and responsibility". While strengthening its own cultural construction, it pays attention to the social responsibility of cultural leadership. Strengthen the construction of the faculty team by introducing and cultivating at the same time. The college currently has 1,191 faculty members, including 732 full-time teachers. Among the full-time teachers, 272 have associate senior titles or above, accounting for 37.2%; 655 have doctoral and master's degrees, accounting for 89.5%; and 270 are "dual-qualified and dual-capable" teachers, accounting for 36.9%. Among the faculty, there is one expert who enjoys the special government allowance of the State Council, two provincial teaching masters, and five provincial subject leaders. In the past three years, teachers have undertaken 262 projects at the provincial and ministerial levels or above, won 5 provincial teaching achievement awards, and obtained 116 authorized patents. 23 collaborative education projects of the Ministry of Education and 1 new agricultural science project of the Ministry of Education have been approved. The college has 15 teaching departments (colleges and departments), including the Department of Computer Science and Technology, the Department of Intelligence and Automation, the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, the Department of Materials and Chemical Engineering, the Department of Architecture and Environmental Engineering, the Department of Art and Design, the Department of Culture and Tourism, the Department of Finance and Economics, the Department of Management, the Department of Education, the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Foreign Languages, the Department of Music, the School of Marxism, and the Department of Public Physical Education, 2 teaching centers (public experimental center, engineering training center) and the School of Continuing Education, offering 37 undergraduate majors. The college currently has 175 experimental training rooms, 2 experimental training buildings, and a usable area of 25,400 square meters for experimental training sites. The college focuses on cultivating students' professional abilities, and encourages and supports students to participate in subject competitions, innovation and entrepreneurship training, and professional qualification examinations. In 2021, the college participated in 46 discipline competitions at all levels and won a total of 209 awards, 602 provincial and above awards, and 72 national awards. From January to May 2022, the college participated in the College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program (National Higher Education Quality Improvement Project) and applied for a total of 202 projects, and 134 projects were established. The college strives to build talent training bases, technology innovation bases, and teacher training bases to form an important support for the construction of application-oriented brand majors and application technology characteristic disciplines.
