Tonghua Normal University is the only provincial undergraduate college in southeastern Jilin Province, located in Tonghua City at the foot of Changbai Mountain, on the Yalu River, and on the Sino-North Korean border. The history of Tonghua Normal University can be traced back to the Liaodong Provincial No. 6 Normal School established in 1929. In 1958, it was changed to Tonghua Normal College in accordance with the needs of career development. In 1978, it was officially upgraded to a general undergraduate college with the approval of the Ministry of Education and renamed Tonghua Normal University. According to the talent classification of Jilin Province, there are 1 B-type talent, 1 C-type talent, 19 D-type talents, and 12 E-type talents. More than 300 senior experts from outside the school are employed as distinguished professors, visiting professors, and skilled teachers; there are 8 provincial excellent teaching teams, 4 provincial ideological and political teaching teams, and 4 Jilin Provincial Higher Education Innovation Teams, and a total of 23 provincial education and teaching achievement awards have been won. The School of Medicine and Health Industry was selected as the first batch of provincial demonstration modern industrial college construction projects in Jilin Province. The university focuses on the research of Changbai Mountain's natural resources and historical culture. It has 31 provincial scientific research platforms, including provincial key laboratories, provincial characteristic cultural research bases, provincial social science key field research bases, provincial college humanities and social science bases, provincial characteristic new college think tanks, and provincial major demand collaborative innovation centers. In the past three years, it has undertaken 11 national projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Social Science Foundation, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Education and Science Planning, and the National Publishing Fund; won 2 national scientific research awards and 39 provincial and ministerial scientific research awards; obtained 237 national authorized patents; 15 consulting reports adopted by the government; published 76 academic works; published 345 high-level papers. Guided by the internationalization of scientific research, it has carried out 4 foreign intellectual introduction projects. The university attaches great importance to open education, and has established friendly cooperative relations with more than 60 colleges and institutions at home and abroad, and carried out various forms of teacher-student exchange programs. The school actively serves the revitalization and development of Jilin, comprehensively assists Tonghua's economic take-off, actively promotes the construction of applied universities, deepens transformation and development, builds four major professional clusters of "teacher education, medical health, art and media, management and service", and continuously deepens the cooperation between schools and local governments, schools and enterprises, schools and alumni. It has signed school-local cooperation agreements with Tonghua City, Ji'an City, Huinan County, Liuhe County, Tonghua County and other places, and established the first rural revitalization college in Jilin Province. Signed a special agreement on strategic cooperation for rural revitalization with the Tonghua Municipal People's Government, was selected into the "Hundred Schools and Hundred Counties to Revitalize Thousands of Villages" action of the National Rural Revitalization Bureau, and carried out rural revitalization pairing assistance with the Ji'an Municipal People's Government to open up the last kilometer of school-enterprise cooperation. The school was selected as the leading unit of the Rural Revitalization Modern Industry College Cooperation Group of Colleges and Universities in the province. The Rural Innovation Park in Xiahuolong Village, Ji'an, was awarded the first "Rural Revitalization Practice Education Base" in the province by the Jilin Provincial Rural Revitalization Bureau. The school implements the "Yingshanhong Teaching Plan" to realize the rolling internship of normal students in spring and autumn, build an integrated model of posting, teaching and internship, effectively improve students' practical ability, and strengthen the connotation of application-oriented talent training. In 2022, the "Yingshanhong" teaching team was rated as the seventh batch of national Lei Feng activity demonstration sites by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, and the Tonghua Normal University "Yingshanhong" Teachers' Ethics Education Base was approved as the Jilin Province Teachers' Ethics Education Base.
