The University of South China was established by the merger of Central South University of Technology and Hengyang Medical College in March 2000. In October 2002, the Sixth Institute of Nuclear Industry was incorporated. The predecessor of Central South University of Technology was Hengyang Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, which was founded in 1959, and the predecessor of Hengyang Medical College was Hunan Hengyang Medical College, which was founded in 1958. The school is jointly built by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the National Health Commission, the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, China National Nuclear Corporation and the People's Government of Hunan Province. It is a first-class university in Hunan Province and a university supported by the National Basic Capacity Construction Project for Colleges and Universities in Central and Western China. In the long history of running schools, the school has formed a distinct "nuclear feature", "medical brand" and "environmental protection advantage". It is a comprehensive university with engineering and medicine as the main subjects, and coordinated development of 9 major disciplines such as philosophy, economics, law, literature, science, management and art. The university has 25 directly affiliated colleges, 8 directly affiliated hospitals, 27 graduate collaborative training units; 66 undergraduate majors; 26 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, 19 master's professional degree authorization categories; 5 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points; 5 first-level discipline postdoctoral research mobile stations. The school enrolls students from all over the country (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) and some countries and regions. There are currently 36,770 full-time undergraduates, 7,050 doctoral and master's students, and 388 international students. The school has 19 national first-class undergraduate majors, 21 national characteristic majors, national defense key majors and in-demand majors, excellence plan majors, and comprehensive reform pilot majors; there are 3 national experimental teaching demonstration centers and virtual simulation experimental teaching centers; there are 20 national first-class courses, 3 national quality courses and quality open courses; there are 2 practical teaching bases for the "big ideological and political courses" of the Ministry of Education, and 46 provincial innovation and entrepreneurship education centers and school-enterprise cooperation innovation and entrepreneurship education bases. It is the first in the country to implement the "free medical student" policy and promote the reform of the "medicine + X" talent training model. It was selected as the first batch of outstanding engineers and outstanding doctors education and training units of the Ministry of Education, and was selected as the first batch of "three-dimensional education" comprehensive reform pilot institutes in the country. It was rated as the National May Fourth Red Flag Youth League Committee, the National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Typical Experience University, and the National Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship Education Advanced Collective. The school's five disciplines, including clinical medicine, chemistry, engineering, pharmacology and toxicology, biology and biochemistry, entered the top 1% of the ESI global ranking, and nuclear science and technology were selected as "world-class cultivation disciplines." There are 9 platforms including the National Demonstration Base for the Training of Innovative Talents in Nuclear Medicine and Nuclear Medicine, the Provincial and Ministerial Jointly-built Collaborative Innovation Center for Nuclear Fuel Cycle Technology and Equipment, the National Demonstration International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Nuclear Energy and Nuclear Safety, the National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center, the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education, the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and the National Key Laboratory Cultivation Base; there are 84 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, provincial engineering technology research centers, and provincial social science research bases. The school has successively undertaken more than 3,500 scientific research projects such as the "863" plan projects, the "973" plan projects, the National Science and Technology Major Special Projects, the National Key R&D Plan Projects, the National Natural Science Foundation Major Research Plan Projects/Joint Fund Key Projects/Key International (Regional) Cooperation Research Projects/Foreign Senior Scholars Research Fund Projects, National Defense Basic Research Programs, and Nuclear Energy Development Special Projects; and won 12 national science and technology awards, more than 300 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, and more than 20 provincial and ministerial outstanding social science achievement awards. The school has established cooperative relations with more than 30 domestic and foreign universities and research institutions such as the International Atomic Energy Agency, the University of Cambridge, the Australian National University, and Tohoku University in Japan. It has been approved as a "Hunan Province Foreign Experts Workstation", and the education of international students has passed the "Quality of Education and Management of International Students in China" certification of the Ministry of Education. The school's 8 directly affiliated hospitals are located in Hengyang and Changsha, of which the First Affiliated Hospital, the Second Affiliated Hospital, the Nanhua Hospital, the Changsha Central Hospital, the Maternal and Child Health Hospital, and the Occupational Disease Prevention and Treatment Hospital are Class III Class A hospitals, and the Seventh Affiliated Hospital is the first provincial-level veterans' hospital in the country to be transferred to a university. The affiliated hospitals have a total of nearly 13,000 employees and more than 3,000 clinical teachers; a total of more than 10,000 beds are open, with an annual outpatient and emergency volume of about 6 million people and an annual surgical volume of more than 160,000 units. The school has been approved as a national major epidemic treatment base and a regional medical and health center supporting construction unit.
