Wuhan Maritime Vocational College was founded in 1984. With the approval of the Hubei Provincial Government, it was upgraded from the original Wuhan Maritime Secondary Vocational and Technical School to Wuhan Maritime Vocational College. It is an independent public higher vocational college affiliated to the Yangtze River Communications Administration and the Hubei Provincial Department of Education. The college is a high-quality crew training institution recognized by the Maritime Safety Administration of the Ministry of Transport. It has rich educational resources and is a "Hubei Industrial Workers Training Demonstration Base", "Hubei Water Emergency Training Base", "Crew Examination and Evaluation Base", "Changhang System Cadre Training Base", and "Wuhan Designated Training Institution".
