Wuhan University of Science and Technology is a local high-level university jointly established by the People's Government of Hubei Province and the Ministry of Education, and a "domestic first-class university construction university" in Hubei Province. It has been selected as a "demonstration university for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform" and "a base for the transformation and technology transfer of scientific and technological achievements in higher education institutions" by the Ministry of Education, a "demonstration base for the cultivation of innovative talents" by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and a "pilot university for intellectual property rights" by the State Intellectual Property Office. It is also an "innovation and entrepreneurship college" and a "demonstration base for the incubation of college students' entrepreneurship". The history of the school can be traced back to the technical school established in 1898 by Zhang Zhidong, the governor of Huguang in the late Qing Dynasty, who requested the Qing government to approve it. After the inheritance and development of Hubei Secondary Industrial School and Central South Iron and Steel Industrial School, it was established as Wuhan Iron and Steel College in 1958 and started undergraduate education. In 1995, Wuhan Iron and Steel College, Wuhan Architectural College, and Wuhan Metallurgical Medical College, which were affiliated to the former Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, merged to form Wuhan University of Metallurgical Science and Technology. In 1998, according to the needs of the national higher education management system reform, it became the first batch of transferred institutions to implement "central and local co-construction, mainly managed by the People's Government of Hubei Province". In 1999, it was renamed Wuhan University of Science and Technology. Over the past 100 years, the university has trained more than 250,000 professionals of various types for the country and society. A large number of outstanding alumni have grown into academicians, experts and scholars, party and government leaders, and heads of large steel enterprises. The university is known as the "cradle of high-level metallurgical talents". The university currently has three campuses: Qingshan, Huangjia Lake and Hongshan, with a total campus area of 1.7143 million square meters and a school building area of 1.29 million square meters. Fixed assets are 3.301 billion yuan; the total value of teaching and scientific research equipment is 843 million yuan; the library has a collection of 2.8599 million paper books and 104.180,000 books. There are more than 25,000 full-time undergraduate students and more than 10,000 doctoral and master's students. The campus overlooks the lake and the river, has beautiful scenery, complete teaching facilities, and perfect school conditions. It is an "Ecological Garden School in Hubei Province" and a "National Model Unit for Greening". The school has a complete range of disciplines and distinctive characteristics. It has built a comprehensive university discipline system with engineering as the main focus, combining science and engineering, and coordinated development of engineering, science, management, medicine, literature, economics, law, philosophy, art, education, and cross-disciplinary disciplines. There are 18 colleges (departments) and 79 undergraduate majors; it has 8 postdoctoral research mobile stations, 8 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points and 40 second-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 33 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points and 174 second-level discipline master's degree authorization points, and 20 master's professional degree categories. There is 1 national key (cultivation) discipline, 1 "14th Five-Year Plan" priority development discipline of the Ministry of Education, 10 provincial key disciplines, 5 provincial key (cultivation) disciplines, and 6 provincial advantageous and characteristic discipline groups. Three disciplines, including materials science and engineering, metallurgy and mining engineering, and mechanical engineering, were selected as "domestic first-class disciplines" in Hubei Province; materials science and engineering was selected as a key discipline in Hubei Province's first-class disciplines; and six disciplines, including materials science, engineering, chemistry, clinical medicine, computer science, and environment/ecology, entered the top 1% of the ESI global ranking. The school insists on deepening education and teaching reforms, and has been approved for 40 first-class undergraduate major construction sites in the "Double 10,000 Plan" (including 28 national-level ones), 14 national-level specialty majors, "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" and other national-level professional construction projects, and 18 undergraduate majors have passed the professional certification (assessment) of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. 16 national-level first-class undergraduate courses, 14 national planning textbooks, and 7 practical teaching platforms such as the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center and the Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center were approved. Won 6 national teaching achievement awards (including 1 first prize). Approved 3 national-level new engineering research and practice projects and 1 national-level new liberal arts research and reform practice project. The average employment rate of graduates remains above 95%. Students have achieved excellent results in various high-level academic and scientific competitions at all levels, such as the China International College Student Innovation Competition and the "Challenge Cup". Since the 13th Five-Year Plan, the school has won more than 5,500 international and national awards; the school ranked 47th in the "2022 National General College Subject Competition Evaluation Results" released by the China Higher Education Society. The school's women's basketball team is well-known throughout the country, winning the National Universiade, CUBA and CUBS championships many times, and has trained more than 10 national team and national youth team players. The university has strong scientific research strength, with the first national key laboratory of Hubei provincial universities - "National Key Laboratory of Refractory Materials and Metallurgy Co-built by the Province and the Ministry", the first national engineering research center of Hubei provincial universities - "National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center of High-temperature Materials and Furnace Lining Technology", the first key laboratory of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of Hubei provincial universities - "National Key Laboratory of Mining and Metallurgical Resources Utilization and Pollution Control for Environmental Protection" and two national collaborative innovation centers - "Collaborative Innovation Center for High-performance Steel Materials and Their Applications Co-built by the Province and the Ministry" and "Collaborative Innovation Center for Strategic Vanadium Resources Utilization Co-built by the Province and the Ministry". It has 3 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 1 engineering research center of the Ministry of Education, 1 joint laboratory for international cooperation of the Ministry of Education, 1 "Research Base of the Chinese Community" of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, 1 national collaborative innovation center (joint), and 31 provincial scientific research platforms. Since the 13th Five-Year Plan, the university has hosted and undertaken more than 610 national projects such as the National Key R&D Program, the National Natural Science Foundation, and the National Social Science Foundation, and has won more than 260 provincial and ministerial science and technology (social science) achievement awards. Since 2007, the university has won 19 national science and technology achievement awards (1 first prize, 13 second prizes, and 5 second prizes for national technological inventions). The university actively implements the strategy of strengthening the university with talents, and currently has more than 2,700 faculty and staff, including more than 1,900 full-time teachers. The "Innovation and Talent Attraction Base for Steel and Application Performance for Marine Engineering" was selected into the "Innovation and Talent Attraction Plan for Disciplines in Higher Education Institutions" jointly organized and implemented by the Ministry of Education and the State Administration of Foreign Experts; the "Innovation and Talent Attraction Base for Advanced Refractory Materials" and the "Hybrid Intelligence Attraction and Innovation Demonstration Base" were selected into the Hubei Province Talent Attraction and Innovation Demonstration Bases. The school actively innovates school-enterprise and school-local cooperation, and has established comprehensive cooperative relations with more than 30 large enterprises such as China Baowu, Evergrande Group, Anshan Iron and Steel Group, Liuzhou Iron and Steel Group, China First Metallurgical Group, MCC South, and relevant cities and prefectures in and outside the province such as Wuhan, Suizhou, Xiaogan, and Wuxi. It was selected as the first batch of pilot universities for the construction of Hubei Excellent Engineer College, and established the "China Baowu-Wuhan University of Science and Technology Carbon Materials Joint Engineering Research Center", "Wuhan University of Science and Technology-Huangshi Industry-University-Research Cooperation Innovation Center", and "Wuhan University of Science and Technology-Laohekou Science and Technology Research Institute". It has co-built the "Evergrande Management College" and "Evergrande Football College" with Evergrande Group; it has 1 directly affiliated tertiary-level A-class hospital, 1 directly affiliated secondary hospital and 8 non-directly affiliated hospitals; it has established nearly 20 social scholarships such as the Niobium Steel Postgraduate Scholarship, Huiling Scholarship, Punai Scholarship, Yeji 77 Scholarship, Siddi International Scholarship, Li Cuiping Art Scholarship, Shenghui Scholarship, and Chuangze Scholarship. The university adheres to the principle of facing the world and running schools in an open manner. It is the first provincial university in Hubei Province to carry out international education exchanges and cooperation, an advanced unit of Hubei Province's foreign affairs, a qualified university for the "International Cooperation Training Program for Innovative Talents" of the China Scholarship Council, a network cooperation unit of the "China-Africa Innovation Cooperation Center", and a demonstration base for innovation and entrepreneurship among China-Africa youth. It has established academic exchanges and cooperation with more than 100 universities and scientific research institutions in dozens of countries and regions such as the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Australia, the Netherlands, Austria, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea, and has carried out exchanges and cooperation in many aspects such as student exchanges, teacher visits, and joint scientific research. It cooperates with Deakin University in Australia, Birmingham City University in the United Kingdom, Bridgeport University in the United States, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Foggia in Italy to organize undergraduate education programs, and cooperates with the Free University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands to organize master's education programs; it jointly trains high-level innovative talents for doctors and postdoctoral fellows with many world-renowned universities such as the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The university vigorously develops education for international students in China, and recruits nearly 500 foreign students in undergraduate majors such as clinical medicine, civil engineering, and international business administration, as well as doctoral and master's degree authorization points in first-level disciplines such as materials science and engineering, control science and engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering and technology, safety science and engineering, mining engineering, and systems science.
