Xi'an International Studies University is one of the first four foreign language colleges established in New China. It is the only general university in the northwest region with a complete range of major foreign languages. In 1951, with the approval of the Ministry of Education of the Central People's Government, the Russian Department of the College of Liberal Arts of Lanzhou University, the Russian Section of the Department of Foreign Languages of Northwest University, and the Russian Department were merged to form Northwest Russian College, the predecessor of Xi'an International Studies University.
