In 1950, during their visit to the Soviet Union, Chairman Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai agreed to the proposal of Comrade Saifuding Aizezi, then Vice Chairman of the People's Government of Xinjiang Province, to build a medical college in Urumqi, Xinjiang, and included it in the 156 key projects of the Soviet Union's "First Five-Year Plan" to assist the construction of New China. In 1954, the predecessor of Xinjiang Medical University, Xinjiang Medical College, started construction at the foot of Liyu Mountain. At the call of the Party Central Committee, a large number of outstanding teachers and medical workers from Beijing, Shanghai, Shandong, Liaoning and other places gathered at Xinjiang Medical College, laying a solid foundation for the development of the school. In 1956, Xinjiang Medical College was officially built and enrolled for the first time. 233 clinical medicine undergraduates held an opening ceremony in Suyuan, Xinyi Road Campus, marking that the people of Xinjiang have their own "cradle" for cultivating medical talents. In 1961, with the approval of the People's Government of the Autonomous Region, some classes of Urumqi Health School and Autonomous Region Health Cadre School were merged to form the Autonomous Region Traditional Chinese Medicine School. In 1985, it was rebuilt into Xinjiang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 1998, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Xinjiang Medical College and Xinjiang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine merged to form Xinjiang Medical University, and the school's development has reached a new level. In 2016, the school was officially approved to become a provincial and ministerial co-construction university, opening a new chapter in the development of Xinjiang's medical higher education and health care. In recent years, under the strong leadership of the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping as the core, and with the care and support of the Party Committee and the People's Government of the Autonomous Region, the school's school-running and medical level and comprehensive strength have steadily improved. In April 2023, the new Party Committee of the school was established, and the goal of building a "first-class medical university in the west and radiating Central Asia" was determined, and the school entered a new stage of high-quality development. The school currently has 18,016 faculty and staff (including 1,485 in universities and 16,531 in affiliated units), 27,984 full-time students (21,682 undergraduates, 5,117 master's students, 678 doctoral students, and 507 international students at all levels of academic education). The school has two Huang Danian-style teaching teams in national universities, one national teaching master, one national model teacher, one national teaching master in colleges of traditional Chinese medicine, one national master of traditional Chinese medicine, four national famous traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, and one "Yangtze River Scholar Lecture Professor"; six people were selected into the "National Hundred Thousand Talents Project", and 63 experts enjoy special government subsidies from the State Council; there are 17 autonomous region-level teaching masters and 12 teaching experts. Two people were awarded the title of "National Outstanding Communist Party Member", four people were awarded the honorary title of "National Model Worker", and 10 people were awarded the "National May 1st Labor Medal". The school has successively won the honorary titles of autonomous region party building demonstration school, national ethnic unity and progress demonstration school, autonomous region rule of law demonstration school, and autonomous region language and writing demonstration school. The university has 26 colleges and departments, offering 29 undergraduate majors and 11 junior college majors, 6 national featured majors, 6 autonomous region key majors, 9 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 7 autonomous region first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 10 national first-class undergraduate courses, 18 autonomous region first-class undergraduate courses, and 1 national talent training model innovation experimental zone. There are five disciplines: medicine, science, engineering, management, and law, forming a discipline structure and layout with medicine as the main subject and other disciplines complementing each other. The discipline of clinical medicine entered the top 2.33‰ of the ESI global ranking, pharmacology and toxicology ranked in the top 8.32‰ of the ESI global ranking, and the potential value of biology and biochemistry increased to 91.43%. Four disciplines were selected into the autonomous region's "14th Five-Year Plan" key discipline construction sequence, of which clinical medicine was selected as an advantageous discipline (autonomous region first-class discipline), and pharmacy, traditional Chinese medicine, public health and preventive medicine were selected as featured disciplines. There are 5 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 2 professional doctoral degree authorization points, 13 first-level master's degree authorization points, 8 master's professional degree authorization points, 4 postdoctoral research mobile stations, and 4 postdoctoral research workstations. The school currently has 60 scientific research platforms at the provincial and ministerial levels and above, including 1 National Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinical Research Base, 1 National Key Laboratory jointly built by the Ministry of Science and Technology, 1 National International Science and Technology Cooperation Base of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 9 sub-centers of the National Clinical Medicine Research Center, 1 Laboratory jointly built by the Ministry of Education, 1 Discipline Innovation and Intelligence Introduction Plan for Higher Education Institutions of the Ministry of Education, 1 International Cooperation Joint Laboratory of the Ministry of Education, 1 Collaborative Innovation Center jointly built by the Ministry of Education, and 1 Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education; 18 autonomous region key laboratories, 13 autonomous region clinical medicine research centers, 2 autonomous region engineering technology research centers, 1 "14th Five-Year Plan" autonomous region general colleges and universities humanities and social sciences key research base, 1 autonomous region to build a strong sense of community research and practice base for the Chinese nation, 1 autonomous region talent introduction demonstration base, and 7 autonomous region popular science education bases. The eight directly affiliated hospitals under the jurisdiction of the university adhere to the people-centered development concept, and are guided by the clinical needs of treating difficult and critical diseases and highly prevalent diseases in Xinjiang and neighboring countries. Focusing on the construction of the medical service center in the core area of the Silk Road Economic Belt, the university gives full play to the advantages of the main force of the medical system in Xinjiang, and actively serves the national strategy and regional social and economic development. The affiliated hospitals have formed a medical resource cluster with concentrated advantages, distinctive characteristics, staggered development, and overall linkage, and have high social visibility and influence, making positive contributions to the construction of "Healthy China" and "Healthy Xinjiang". The university has continuously strengthened exchanges and cooperation with well-known universities at home and abroad, and has established comprehensive counterpart support and cooperation relations with Central South University, Jilin University, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, China Pharmaceutical University, and Wenzhou Medical University. It has established in-depth co-construction and cooperation relations with more than 20 universities such as Fudan University, Sun Yat-sen University, and Nanjing Medical University. It has established inter-school cooperation relations with universities and research institutions in many countries such as Russia, Japan, the United Kingdom, Tajikistan, Georgia, and Kazakhstan. It is one of the first demonstration bases for overseas students in Xinjiang and one of the first universities to receive government scholarships. It was awarded the Advanced Collective for International Student Education in China by the Ministry of Education. It has trained more than 100 graduate students and over 1,000 undergraduates from 39 countries including India, Pakistan, and Kazakhstan.
