Yunnan Nationalities University is a comprehensive university that trains senior professionals from all ethnic groups. It is a provincial key university jointly established by the Ministry of Education, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and the Yunnan Provincial People's Government. The school was founded on August 1, 1951. It was formerly known as Yunnan Nationalities College. It is one of the earliest ethnic colleges and universities established in the People's Republic of China. It was renamed Yunnan Nationalities University in April 2003 and has gone through more than 70 years of history. Since its establishment, the school has always been highly valued and cared for by the leaders of the Party and the country. Party and state leaders Mao Zedong, Liu Shaoqi, Zhu De, Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao, and Xi Jinping have met with representatives of teachers and students of our school; Zhou Enlai, Peng Dehuai, Chen Yi, Panchen Erdeni Qoigyi Gyaltsen, Li Lanqing, Li Tieying, Simayi Aimaiti and others visited the school in person and cared about the growth and progress of teachers and students of all ethnic groups and the construction and development of the school. The first president and vice president of the school were General Zhou Baozhong and General Zhang Chong, vice chairmen of the Yunnan Provincial People's Government. Since its establishment, a group of academic celebrities, such as Professor Ma Yao, a famous ethnologist, historian, and educator, Professor Wang Ningsheng, a famous ethnologist and archaeologist, Professor He Yaohua, a famous historian and ethnologist, Professor He Shaoying, a famous ethnologist and anthropologist, and Professor Xie Benshu, a famous historian, have become the founders and backbones of the school's teaching, scientific research, and discipline construction and development. The school has now become a comprehensive university with a full range of disciplines and distinctive school characteristics, covering 9 disciplines including economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management, and art. It has formed a discipline and professional structure with ethnology, sociology, ethnic languages and literature, and Southeast Asian and South Asian languages and cultures as its advantages and characteristics, and a balanced emphasis on arts and sciences and coordinated development of multiple disciplines. The university has 2 postdoctoral research stations, 2 first-level doctoral programs, 17 first-level master programs, 20 professional master programs and 76 undergraduate majors, including 20 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 21 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and 41 majors have entered the ranks of first-class undergraduate major construction sites of the "Double 10,000 Plan". There are currently 13 provincial key disciplines and advantageous and characteristic disciplines. The university has the "National Demonstration Base for Traditional Sports of Ethnic Minorities", "National Research Center for the Development of College Counselors (Yunnan University for Nationalities)", "Training and Research Center for Ideological and Political Work Teams in Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education (Yunnan University for Nationalities)", "Western Grassroots Legal Talent Education and Training Base of the Ministry of Education", "Ministry of Education Minority Preparatory Education and Training Base", and "National Ethnic Affairs Commission-Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Chemistry of Ethnic Medicine Resources". The university currently has a total of about 34,000 undergraduate, master, doctoral students and international students, and more than 30,000 continuing education students. There are 1,729 faculty members, including 216 senior professional titles, 422 associate senior professional titles, 577 intermediate professional titles, 514 junior and lower professional titles, 469 doctoral degrees and 924 master's degrees. The school currently has 13 national high-level talents, including social science leaders in the National Special Support Program for High-level Talents, young top talents, national new century talents, and chief experts of major projects of the National Social Science Fund; 94 people have been selected for the Yunnan Province Xingdian Talent Support Program, and 61 provincial high-level talents such as candidates for special allowances from the Yunnan Provincial Government, outstanding professional and technical talents with outstanding contributions in Yunnan Province, young and middle-aged academic and technical leaders in Yunnan Province, and "four batches" of talents in Yunnan Province; 2 members of the Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education. The school covers an area of 2,545 acres and has a building area of 900,000 square meters. It has more than 10 national and provincial research institutions and talent training bases, 1 ethnic museum, and nearly 20,000 cultural relics. The library has more than 2.4 million paper books of various types and nearly 1.3 million electronic books. The Journal of Yunnan Nationalities University (Philosophy and Social Sciences Edition) is included in the 2020 edition (i.e. the 9th edition) of the "Comprehensive Humanities and Social Sciences" core journal of the "Overview of Chinese Core Journals". It is a source journal of the Chinese Social Science Citation Index (CSSCI), a core journal of the AMI Comprehensive Evaluation of Chinese Humanities and Social Sciences, a core journal of Chinese science and technology, and an "Excellent Journal" of the First Yunnan Provincial News Publishing, Radio, Film and Television Award. The Journal of Yunnan Nationalities University (Natural Science Edition) has been selected as a source journal of the "China Science and Technology Paper Statistics Source Journal" (China Science and Technology Core Journal) since 2012, and has been rated as an excellent science and technology journal of Chinese universities and a characteristic science and technology journal of Chinese universities. The school attaches great importance to foreign cooperation and exchanges, and is an important window for the country and Yunnan to open up to the outside world. Since its establishment, more than 100,000 heads of state, dignitaries, experts, scholars and international friends from more than 80 countries and regions, including Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, former US Secretary of State Dr. Kissinger, King Harald V of Norway, and President Ho Chi Minh of Vietnam, have visited Yunnan Nationalities University and given good comments. The school began to recruit foreign students in 1981 and foreign master's students in 1992. It is one of the earliest universities in Yunnan Province to recruit foreign students and conduct Chinese teaching as a foreign language. It has established cooperative exchanges with nearly 100 universities or academic institutions in more than 30 countries, including the United States, Norway, Japan, and South Korea. Many foreign dignitaries, scholars, and journalists, such as the "28-country foreign envoy delegation to China" and the "12-country 21-journalist delegation" organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, have visited the school to learn about Yunnan's ethnic culture and policies, and left a deep impression. For more than 70 years since its establishment, the school has always taken it as its mission to be based in the frontier, serve the frontier, and serve the unity, prosperity and development of ethnic groups. Most of the first generation of bachelor's, master's, doctoral, experts, scholars, party and government management cadres, education experts, and entrepreneurs among the 25 ethnic minorities living in Yunnan were trained by the school, especially the ethnic cadres in the 29 ethnic autonomous counties in Yunnan, most of whom graduated from our school. The school offers 13 minority language majors for 12 ethnic groups, including Tibetan, Dai, Lisu, Lahu, Jingpo, Wa, Naxi, Yi, Hani, Zhuang, Miao, and Bai. It is the school with the most minority language majors in the country. The school has become a cradle for the cultivation of high-level and high-quality talents in China, especially in the southwest, an important base for studying ethnic issues and ethnic relations, and an important window for the country and Yunnan to open up to the outside world. Focusing on the goal of forging a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation, the school has built a national unity and progress education system of "six integrations" to vigorously promote exchanges and integration among all ethnic groups. The school was awarded the honor of "National Model Unit for National Unity and Progress" by the State Council four times in 1999, 2005, 2009 and 2019, and was awarded the title of "National Model Unit for the Creation of National Unity and Progress Activities" in 2016 and 2023. It is a "Civilized School of Yunnan Province" and "Model School of National Unity in Yunnan Province". In order to better serve the training of ethnic minority talents, in 2013, based on the original preparatory education college, the Yunnan Higher Education Ethnic Minority Preparatory Education Base was established in the school, building a bridge for ethnic minority students to access higher education and cultivating and supplying high-quality ethnic minority undergraduate students to colleges and universities inside and outside the province. The base has been commended by the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and Yunnan Province for many times.Won the title of "National Model Collective for National Unity and Progress". In December 2017, General Secretary Xi Jinping proposed in his reply to the college student Alinur Alim: Spread the belief that all ethnic groups are one family to more people, and be a practitioner, promoter and guardian of national unity in the new era. The school is committed to sowing the seeds of friendship. It has opened 15 official language majors in 14 South Asian and Southeast Asian countries, including Thai, Burmese, Vietnamese, Lao, Cambodian, Malay, Indonesian, Hindi, Bengali, Filipino, Tamil, Pashto, Sinhalese, Nepali, Urdu, etc., and has provided a large number of talents for the society. The school actively responded to the "Belt and Road" initiative. On May 15, 2015, under the joint witness of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Indian Prime Minister Modi, Yunnan Nationalities University and the Indian Cultural Relations Committee signed a memorandum of understanding on the joint construction of the China-India Yoga College. The joint construction was written into Article 21 of the "Joint Statement of China and India". The Sino-Indian Yoga College was established in our school, becoming the world's first yoga college outside of India. In November 2017, Premier Li Keqiang gave important instructions on the construction of the college, and the main leaders of the Ministry of Education and the State General Administration of Sports respectively issued special instructions. After six years of construction and development, the college has pioneered yoga academic education in colleges and universities across the country. At present, it has become the National Fitness Yoga Theoretical Research Center of the State General Administration of Sports, and is committed to becoming the standard setter, rule maintainer, industry leader, and even the founder of the Chinese yoga discipline in China. In order to further integrate into the national strategy and give play to the regional advantages, in December 2014, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education of China agreed to add Yunnan Nationalities University as the second batch of China-ASEAN Education and Training Center organizers. In December 2016, with the approval of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the school established the Lancang-Mekong Vocational Education Base on the basis of the China-ASEAN Education and Training Center. After years of construction, the school has established 8 training bases at the China-Myanmar, China-Vietnam and China-Laos border ports, 3 training bases in Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, and training bases in Kunming and Dehong areas of China (Yunnan) Pilot Free Trade Zone, providing more than 40,000 professional and technical personnel training for the Mekong countries. In order to broaden the scope of Lancang-Mekong vocational education cooperation, the school has established Lancang-Mekong International Vocational College, Lancang-Mekong Vocational Education Alliance, Lancang-Mekong International Cooperation Research Institute and other multi-level and multi-field in-depth promotion of Lancang-Mekong vocational education cooperation, enriching and enriching the school's construction achievements in serving the national strategy. It has become a project jointly discussed, built and shared by the six Lancang-Mekong countries and has been rated as a "national-level education foreign cooperation and exchange project" by the Ministry of Education. In the future, the school will continue to focus on connotative development, constantly explore and build a modern university system, rooted in Yunnan, facing the whole country, radiating South Asia and Southeast Asia, and strive to move forward towards a high-level ethnic university, a model school for ethnic unity, and a model school for "three styles" construction under the background of the national "double first-class" construction.
