The school was founded as a teacher training school on May 7, 1983 by Executive Decree No. 314/83, transformed into the National Higher Mechanical School on August 18, 1984 by Executive Decree No. 255/84, became a university center on May 10, 1997 by Executive Decree No. 158/97, and was named after the martyr Rabbi Ben Mshidi in November 1999. It was officially promoted to a university on January 4, 2009 by Executive Decree No. 09/06, and was amended and improved on April 15, 2013 by Executive Decree No. 13/164.
