History and establishment time

The history of the University of Jaén dates back to the 14th century. In 1368, there was a school teaching grammar, rhetoric, logic and all liberal arts.

In 1503, Pope Paul III authorized the Monastery of Santa Catalina to study liberal arts, medicine, theology and other sciences.

In 1538, Pope Paul III established the University of Bessa in the former Kingdom of Jaén, and the University of Jaén is considered its successor.

On July 1, 1993, according to the Andalusian Parliament No. 5/1993 Decree No. 1, the University of Jaén was officially established.
