History

In 1835 and 1838, Lyon established the Faculty of Sciences and Humanities.

In 1874 and 1875, the Faculty of Medicine and Law were established.

In 1896, these colleges merged to form the University of Lyon. In the same year, the historic buildings on the left bank of the Rhone River were built, initially for the Faculty of Medicine and Sciences, and later for the Faculty of Law and Humanities. Lyon 2 is now located in part of these buildings.

In December 1969, according to the 1968 With the Faure Act of 1865, the University of Lyon was split into three independent universities, and the University of Lyon II was born. At that time, it mainly covered the departments of law, literature and social sciences.

In 1987, the University of Lyon II was renamed the University of Lyon II Lumiere in honor of the Lumiere brothers.
