Introduction
The International School for Advanced Studies, commonly known as SISSA, is an internationally renowned public higher education and research institution located in Trieste, Italy, focusing on teaching and research in the fields of mathematics, physics, neuroscience, etc.
Overview
Number of students and teachers: There are more than 1,000 students and 88 academic staff.
Internationalization: The school is highly international, attracting students and teachers from all over the world, providing students with opportunities to study and communicate with global classmates, helping to enhance students' global and cultural awareness and enhance their competitiveness in the international market.
History
SISSA was founded in 1978 as part of the reconstruction plan after the 1976 Friuli earthquake. At that time, physicist Paolo Budinich proposed to the Italian government to establish a new postgraduate teaching and research institution, which was modeled on the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. The school initially began operations with a doctoral program in theoretical physics, and Budinich himself was appointed as the president. In 1986, Budinich handed over the position to Daniel Amati, then head of the theoretical department at CERN, under whose leadership SISSA expanded its teaching and research activities into the field of neuroscience and established a new interdisciplinary laboratory aimed at connecting humanities and scientific research. Over the years since then, the school has continued to develop, and successive presidents have promoted cooperation with other Italian and European universities in master's degree programs in the fields of mathematics, physics and neuroscience.
