Pontifical Gregorian University is a church school of higher education located in Rome, Italy. It is one of the oldest and largest pontifical universities in Rome.

History

Founded on February 23, 1551 by St. Vincent Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, it was originally called "Roman College". At that time, it included all levels of school education. Its philosophy and theology chairs were approved by the Pope in 1556, becoming the first school founded by the Society of Jesus.

In 1584, Pope Gregory XIII built a new school building for the Roman College and renamed it Gregorian University.

In 1773, the Society of Jesus was suppressed in Europe, and the Gregorian University was forced to be managed by the Diocese of Rome. In 1824, it was returned to the control of the Society of Jesus.

In 1870 In 1865, Rome was incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy and the school's property was confiscated. On December 4, 1873, Pope Pius IX issued a bull to upgrade the school to a university and named it the Pontifical Gregorian University.

The new campus was completed in 1930.

On May 19, 2024, the Pontifical Biblical Institute and the Pontifical Oriental Institute were officially merged into the Pontifical Gregorian University.
