Historical background

1886: Founded in Seoul by American missionary Mary Fletcher Scranton, it is one of the earliest girls' schools in South Korea.

1908: The school motto was set as "Respecting frugality and being pragmatic", and later changed to "Respecting frugality and simplicity".

1921: When the teaching building was completed, the four characters were made into a horizontal plaque and hung in front of the door. Later, the first and last two characters "Sungsil" were taken, and the school name was officially named Soongsil Girls' School.

1926: Due to the separation of kindergarten and elementary school, the school was named "Sungsil Girls' Middle School".

1931: It was directly governed by the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education of the National Government and named "Zhenjiang Private Soongsil Girls' Middle School".

1971: Soongsil University and Daejeon University merged to become a comprehensive university.

Modern: Soongsil Women's University continues to develop and become a well-known women's higher education institution in Korea.
