History and establishment

The university originated in 1934, when Lithuanian President Antanas Smetona established a higher sports course to provide students with higher education degrees and combine physical training with military training. In 1938, the course was discontinued and its functions were taken over by the Department of Physical Education of Vytautas Magnus University.

In 1945, the Lithuanian National Institute of Physical Education was established as an independent institution with an initial enrollment of 100 students. In 1999, the college was renamed the Lithuanian Institute of Physical Education. In 2012, it was officially renamed the Lithuanian University of Physical Education with the approval of the Lithuanian Parliament.
