The school was established in 1930. It was formerly the Novotyibukov State Teachers College. In 1976, it moved to Bryansk and was renamed the Bryansk State Teachers College. In 1995, it became the Bryansk State Teachers University. In 2001, it was renamed the Bryansk State Teachers College. In 2013, it was finally named Bryansk State University.
