On April 26, 1930, the Shipbuilding Department was transformed into an independent educational institution called the Shipbuilding Academy, becoming the direct successor of the Shipbuilding Department of St. Petersburg Marine Technical University. In 1990, the college was awarded the status of a technical university and in 1992 it was renamed the Saint Petersburg State University of Marine Technology.
