Introduction

Chalmers University of Technology is a research-oriented international private university located in Gothenburg, Sweden's second largest city. It has a long tradition and outstanding achievements in engineering, architecture, mathematics and natural science education, and is committed to contributing to the sustainable development of Sweden and the world.

Number of students and faculty: In 2021, the school has approximately 10,712 students, including 1,025 doctoral students and 936 administrative staff.

History and establishment time

The school was founded in 1829 with donations from William Chalmers, one of the directors of the Swedish East India Company. It was originally an industrial school for poor children. In 1937, the school changed from a private university to a national university. In 1994, it was acquired by a foundation and became a private university again, but about 2/3 of its annual funding comes from the Swedish government.

QS World University Rankings: In 2024, the university ranked 129th in the world in the QS World University Rankings; it has always remained in the top 100 in the QS World University Rankings for Science and Engineering; and ranked 83rd in the world in the QS Graduate Employability Rankings.

Other rankings: In the 2023 ARWU ranking, the university ranked 401-500th in the world; in the 2023 U.S. News World University Rankings, the university ranked 337th in the world. In 2018, an MIT benchmark report ranked Chalmers in the top 10 in the world for engineering education; in 2020, the World University Research Ranking ranked the university 12th in the world based on three key research aspects: research multidisciplinarity, research impact and research collaboration; in 2022, U-Multirank ranked the university as one of the best performing universities based on various indicators such as teaching and learning, research, knowledge transfer and international orientation, receiving the most "A" (very good) ratings in Sweden at the institutional level.

Fees

Tuition fees: Bachelor and Master programs in all subject areas except architecture cost SEK 80,000 per semester (SEK 320,000 for a two-year Master program). The tuition fee for the Bachelor and Master programs in Architecture (Architecture and Planning except for the Master programs Architecture and Urban Design and Sustainability) is SEK 105,000 per semester (SEK 420,000 for the two-year Master program).

Scholarships: The school offers a variety of scholarships for international students, such as the Avancez Scholarship, which is provided by the Chalmers University of Technology Foundation and provides winners with a 75% tuition fee waiver. If the first year of school performance is excellent, there is a chance to increase the tuition fee waiver to 85% in the second year; the Ipoet Scholarship is provided by the Swedish Council for Higher Education and has the same content as the Avancez Scholarship; the Volvo Group Scholarship provides a 100% tuition fee waiver, and the Volvo Group will pay full attention to the winners, and may provide them with summer internships, graduation thesis and mentor guidance.

Campus

Campus distribution: The school has two campuses, namely the Johanneberg main campus in the center of Gothenburg, and the Lindholmen campus on Hinsingen Island in the north of the city. The campus is located in the IT Technology Park in Gothenburg, and is also the location of the IT College jointly run by Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg.

Campus facilities: The campus is fully equipped with modern teaching buildings, libraries, laboratories, research centers, student dormitories, restaurants, etc., providing students with good learning and living conditions.
