School History
Origin and Establishment: In 1913, leaders of the National Baptist Convention of the United States discussed with O. L. Hailey the possibility of establishing a seminary for its pastoral education. In the same year, the Southern Baptist Convention passed a resolution to cooperate and appointed a committee. In 1921, with the help of the National Baptist Convention, 53 acres of land at the current site were purchased. In 1923, the first building, Griggs Hall, was built. On September 14, 1924, the school officially opened under the name of American Baptist Theological Seminary.
Development and Change: In 1937, the Southern Baptist Convention agreed to hold a 50% share in the operation of the college with the National Baptist Convention of the United States. In 1971, the school was accredited and officially renamed American Baptist College.
