Antioch College was founded in Yellow Springs, Ohio in 1852. Horace Mann, an educator, social reformer, and abolitionist, was its first president. The school's original goal was to create a non-sectarian, coeducational university without a traditional grading system. In 1863, it approved a policy that no applicants would be rejected on the basis of race. It was also one of the first colleges to offer the same courses to male and female students.
In 1975, Antioch University Seattle was established at the Center School in Fremont. In 1996, the school moved to a two-story building in the Denny Triangle, but the building was later sold in 2015. On January 3, 2017, Antioch University Seattle opened a new campus in nearby Belltown.
