Introduction and Overview: Appalachian State University, abbreviated as App State or ASU, is a comprehensive public university located in Boone, North Carolina, United States. It is affiliated with the University of North Carolina system and ranks sixth in the number of students in the system. History and Founding Time: The school was founded in 1899 and was originally named Watauga Academy, a teacher training school. In 1903, it was renamed Appalachian Training School for Teachers, and in 1925 it was changed to Appalachian State Normal School. In 1929, it became a four-year degree-granting institution and was renamed Appalachian State Teachers College. In 1967, it was officially named Appalachian State University and joined the University of North Carolina system in 1971.
