Long history:
Founded in 1880, it was originally named "Indian University" and is the oldest continuously operating higher education institution in Oklahoma. It was renamed Bacone College in the early 20th century. Its history can be traced back to a Baptist missionary school in western North Carolina, USA. After many migrations and developments, it finally settled in Muskogee, Oklahoma.
In 2014, the Bacone College Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Muskogee County, Oklahoma.
