Introduction and Overview: Belmont Abbey College is a small private Catholic liberal arts college in Belmont, North Carolina, United States, affiliated with the Catholic Church and the Order of Saint Benedict. History and Founding: The college was founded on April 21, 1876 as St. Mary's College by Benedictine monks from the Great Priory of St. Vincent in Pennsylvania. In 1913, the college adopted its current name, Belmont Abbey College. In 1967, the college awarded an honorary degree to Protestant evangelist Billy Graham, which was seen as a bold ecumenical gesture at the time.
