Introduction and Overview: Bennett College is a small private institution located in Greensboro, North Carolina, United States. It is a historically black women's college that provides undergraduate education for women with a student population of approximately 207.
History:
1873: Founded on August 1, originally named Bennett School, a normal school founded by Civil War veteran and Ohio jurist Albion W. Tourgee to provide education for freedmen (former slaves) and train male and female teachers, classes were held in the basement of the North Methodist Episcopal Church of Wernersville (now St. Matthew's United Methodist Church) in Greensboro.
1878: Received a $10,000 grant from New York businessman Lyman Bennett to purchase land for a permanent campus and renamed Bennett Seminary.
1889: Under President Charles N. Grandison, the school is chartered as a four-year college.
1916: Following an investigation by the Phelps-Stokes Foundation, the school begins its transition to a women's college.
1926: Officially reorganized as an all-women's college.
1956: Willa Beatrice Player becomes president, the first African American woman to serve as president of a four-year liberal arts college in the United States.
2018-2019: Faced with deaccreditation due to financial problems, the school retains its accreditation through emergency fundraising and legal action.
