School History
The school was founded in 1927 by the old missionary Bob Jones Sr. It was originally named Bob Jones College and was located in Panama City with only 88 students at the time.
In 1933, the school moved to Cleveland, Tennessee, and survived on the verge of bankruptcy during the Great Depression. Later, it gradually developed into one of the largest liberal arts colleges in Tennessee.
In 1947, the school moved to Greenville, South Carolina, and was renamed Bob Jones University. In the following two years, the school more than doubled in size and established facilities such as a radio station, a film department, and an art gallery.
