The college was founded in 1894 as Clinton Institute, named after Bishop Caleb Isom Clinton of the African Methodist Zion Church.

On June 22, 1909, after obtaining authorization to grant state teaching certificates, it was renamed Clinton Normal and Industrial Institute.

In 1965, the college charter was revised to offer associate degrees and was renamed Clinton Junior College.

In 2013, after obtaining accreditation as a four-year institution, it was renamed Clinton College.
