Introduction and Overview: The school is a public historically black university located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and is a member school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and the University of North Carolina System. History and Founding Date: On March 3, 1891, the North Carolina State Legislature approved the establishment of Elizabeth City State University, originally named Elizabeth City State Colored Normal School, to train black teachers for public schools in North Carolina. In 1937, the school was transformed into a full-time four-year normal college and renamed Elizabeth City State Normal College. In 1961, the school joined the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, changed its name to Elizabeth City State College in 1963, and officially changed its name to Elizabeth City State University in 1969. In 1972, the school became one of the sixteen member universities of the University of North Carolina System.
School Strength: It has an excellent faculty with a teacher-student ratio of 16:1, which can provide students with more adequate one-on-one guidance and support.
