The school was founded in 1965 and was originally a computer programming school in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, founded by Henry and Suzanne Herzing. In 1970, it was renamed Herzing Institute and began to offer associate degree programs. In 1996, it became Herzing College and began to offer bachelor's degree programs. In 2009, it was renamed Herzing University.
