Lawrence University is a private liberal arts college located in Appleton, Wisconsin, United States. Here is a detailed introduction to the school:
History:
Founded in 1847, it is the second coeducational college in the United States. The first president, William Harkness Sampson, and Henry R. Colman co-founded the school with $10,000 provided by philanthropist Amos Adams Lawrence. The school was originally named Lawrence Institute when it was prepared to be chartered, but was renamed Lawrence University before the first class began in 1849. The oldest existing building of the school is the Main Hall, which was built in 1853.
From 1913 to 1964, the school was called Lawrence Institute to highlight its small size and liberal arts education focus. Later, after merging with Milwaukee-Downer College, it retained the name Lawrence University. During World War II, the school was one of 131 American schools participating in the V-12 Naval Academy training program.
Academic Features:
Comprehensive Disciplines: Offers a wide range of disciplines covering humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and other fields. Majors include anthropology, art and art history, biochemistry, biology, cognitive science, computer science, economics, English, environmental studies, geology, history, linguistics, mathematics, philosophy, physics, psychology, etc.
Excellent Music Education: The school has an independent music school, the Lawrence Conservatory of Music (often referred to as "the con"), founded in 1874, which is a highlight of the school. Its courses cover majors such as classical music performance, jazz, music education, and composition. There is a strong musical atmosphere, and music festivals, concerts and other activities are often held.
Personalized Learning: The teacher-student ratio is low, about 1:9, and two-thirds of the courses are one-on-one teaching. There is close communication between students and professors. Professors are very enthusiastic about students and are not limited to the classroom.
Unique Course Program: Freshmen have a Freshmen Studies program, which is a Great Books Program. In the first two semesters of the freshman year, the school divides all freshmen into classes of 15 people regardless of their major, race, or gender, and arranges teachers from all departments of the school to host the classes. Through exploring and discussing art, music, movies, and excellent works, students can improve their personal cultivation and critical thinking ability.
High-intensity learning rhythm: The three-semester system is adopted, and the learning rhythm is fast. This method allows students to improve not only academically, but also to develop good communication skills.
Campus life:
Accommodation: On-campus accommodation is provided, and accommodation is guaranteed for freshmen. The rate of freshmen living on campus is as high as 99%, and the rate of undergraduates living on campus is 97%.
Transportation: 6 miles from Appleton Airport and 20 miles from Green Bay Airport. There is public transportation on campus.
