History

The school was founded on September 18, 1935, and was originally the Norfolk branch of Virginia Union University.

In 1942, the school became independent from Virginia Union University and was renamed Norfolk Institute of Technology.

In 1969, the school was renamed Norfolk State College again, and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in the same year.

In 1979, the school officially became Norfolk State University.
