History:
The school has a long history and is the oldest institution of higher learning in Oklahoma and one of the oldest institutions of higher learning west of the Mississippi River. Its predecessor can be traced back to the Cherokee National Women's Seminary established by the Cherokee in 1851. On March 6, 1909, the Oklahoma State Legislature passed a bill to establish the Northeastern State Normal School in Tahlequah to train teachers. Since then, the school has continued to develop and change its name, going through the stages of Northeastern State Normal College and Northeastern State College.
